I ran the Top of Utah Marathon in 4:43 after having my third child the year before. 5 K in 24:19, 10 K in 53 minutes pregnant. Survived personal training from my lovable but slightly overbearing husband Sasha for more than 8 years!!

Short-Term Running Goals:

Break 23:45 in the 5k.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay thin and full of energy.

Not be an embarassment to my family full of world class athletes.

Personal:

Madly in love with Sasha. We have been married since 1996 and have been blessed with seven of the most adorable and talented children : Benjamin, Jennifer, Julia, and Joseph, Jacob, William and Stephen.

All of our children have run in at least one race, including Jacob and William who did it inside the womb. I enjoy various non-running activities such as: baking, sewing, playing organ, piano and flute, painting, and playing with our  vivacious children.

Hello fellow bloggers. I have been super slow at getting to my blog. I have a really good reason though...in case Sasha hasn't told you that we moved. It's been harder on me I think since I'm in charge of the rest of the household. Putting away a million boxes with 5 children running around is no small task.

Well..enough of that. I stayed up late watching T.V. then woke up late this morning and only had time for 1 mile.

Tomorrow will be 3 miles!!!

I ran 3 miles today!!!! Yay. First time I think besides the Thankgiving race (that was 4)
I have a migraine tonight...yuck. I've tried everything to get rid of these headaches..I get them about once a month..probably a cycle thing.

Great job, Sarah! Welcome back! You're a "far running mommy" already, and before long, you'll be a "fast running mommy" too! Are you planning on doing any races in the spring? It would be neat to break 50min. in 10K, don't you think? Or 24min. in 5K. If you keep running 3-4 miles a day, you'll be in great shape come spring.

From Sarah on Sat, Jan 13, 2007 at 00:09:59

We'll see what happens come spring.

I haven't been racing for the last year because I got pregnant with Jacob when Joseph was only nine months old and I hadn't really recovered from him totally(in my running that is)

Thanks for the inspiring comments..they keep me going.

Ran a good solid 2 miles today...besides the bitter cold or dog cold as Russians would say...it was a very good run and a very good day.

We had our friends over tonight...army runner or Ted and his lovely family. The men would have loved to talk running all night but the women made them play games instead.

I felt pretty good today. I've been a bit moody and I'm trying some homeopathic stuff to help my thyroid problems...The run went well and I am getting used to the freezing cold...brrrrrrrrr.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

I only meant to run two today but was confused about the distance around the block. I thought it was .25 of a mile but Sasha told me after the run that it was more like .36..  So I did 8 laps thinking that was 2 miles..I felt a tiny bit tired and sluggish at the end but not too bad.

I was tired and hungry today but not grouchy. I can handle anything but being grouchy because then I'm not a really good mom....or anything else.

Did about 2 miles today...had to stop short because I had an organ lesson to go to.

I am officiall the ward organist. That means that in our church I play the organ for our main meeting..the sacrament meeting.

I love playing the organ but it is a lot of work and sometimes I can't figure out how to fit it in.

I felt really strong on my run today so that was very positive.

I did 3. I felt like going more but had to get home to the kids and make breakfast.

I hope someday to get back to running 5 miles a day like I could before I had Julia. After I had her my thyroid problems started and life went haywire for awhile..and just having three little kids was hard to adjust to.

Now we have 5 and it's hard but at least the adjustment period is over.

I feel ready to run 3 miles more often than I have been but I haven't been organized enough to get up and get going. I have to be careful though because my job as mommy makes me really need to make sure I get enough sleep...I guess I should go to bed on time too....:)

Nice easy run today...

We have horrible inversion going on and makes me nervous running in it.

I've been wondering if we could somehow encourage people to only leave their engines running for a short period of time...how long does it take to get it warmed up in the morning and how long are people leaving their engines running and adding to the problem...I'm curious.

I have a training partner!! I've never had a training partner the entire time I've run. Her name is Adrian and she lives around the corner from me. There are a lot more runners in this neighborhood which is wonderful!! We are going to train for the Rex E Lee 10K at the end of March....well actually I won't be there for it but we can run another race together...it's just great to have someone there to motivate me to get up in the morning and get going.

Sasha's had Ted to run with all winter and that has been such a blessing...now I have a friend too...Yay!!

We did four miles in 40:33. Good time considering we were talking and not really trying to worry about the time. We are going again tomorrow at 7. Maybe we'll talk some other girls into going with us. :)

Perfect weather today. Adrianne and I ran a nice 3 mile run today in lovely spring weather.

Her baby Will came along in the stroller.

We are training for a ten mile race but I'm race shy now...wonder if I'm getting old

I think that there were some extenuating circumstances last race, right? I would expect that you will not be running right after a trauma this next time, and that you will do very well. Maybe you could take some of the pressure off yourself by changing your goal for the race from one based on time, to one based on fun. Make this one the funnest race you've ever had--get those water fights going, wear a funky hat, or whatever works for you. Having just had 5 little ones does take a toll, but it doesn't mean that you can't still run. It means you should be kinder to yourself and adjust your expectations. Remember, it takes 2 years after having a baby for your body to get back to normal, including replenishing minerals and internal organs getting back to their previous state. (This is according to my nutrition class at BYU.) I think you are amazing for being able to run 10 miles period. Good luck!

Hey, I just read your comments... and I have 2 things to say, First, awesome that Sasha is learning piano and you are helping him. It'll just be one more great thing you guys have in common. Secondly, there is no such thing as being pregnant too early on to have it affect running. I get winded just walking around the pharmacy to get the pregnancy test. Ha ha. You are a running goddess, just admit it.

Oh yeah, and the 6 hours piano was because I'm playing for a school choir concert and I have like a week to learn 12 pieces. The threat of public humiliation is a great motivator, eh? Plus, two of those hours were a run through with the director (the other 4 were half an hour at a time throughout the day).

Oh yeah--Good job on the toy room. You deserve a medal!

Felt tired after the run but then felt great today..made some super yummy enchiladas for dinner...think I'll add this recipe to my collection.

Tired now..ready for bed...snore....

Jacob has been keeping me up the past few nights and I'm a little tired from that. I hope he sleeps well tonight....

It's Sasha's birthday today..I'm sure he didn't say anything himself. We had a small family party..I made his favorite cake...see my cake recipe for details....:)

Fun! I love dates that are calorie expending, rather than fattening. We used to go out to eat a lot. We've added a lot more rollerblading trips, or walks, or even boating. Tell Sasha Happy Birthday!

Ug, sorry about the sleep. Motherhood is very humbling for me. No matter how well I am doing, I am only one sickness away from being brought to my knees. Everything is easier when you are well-rested . . . and everything is so much harder when you're not. Take it easy. My sister who just had a baby goes to bed at 8:00 pm and she is the happiest mother of a newborn I've ever seen. She can even talk without forgetting words. Now if I could only follow her example . . .

I did a tempo run again today..felt much better since I slept better these past few days...although I have a yucky headache as I'm writing this. I cranked out 17:08 for the 2 miles with a 1:54 quarter at the end. The best part though was how quickly I recovered. I was able to run the 4th mile normally and go about my day without any extra fatigue (very important to a busy busy mom)

Felt really good about the run

10 months old! Holy Cow. I hate it if I feel like people are judging me as a parent. It would be so much easier if kids never cried in public, from that standpoint. Now if we can just convince our babies to comply . . .

Almost everything that could go wrong on a run went wrong today.....First even though I went right before I left somehow my bladder shrank and the contents expanded and I had an urgent need the entire run....but couldn't find an open toliet and wasn't about to use the bushes with everyone and their dog(literally) out tonight.

Then my shoulder was tight and aching so bad I felt like crying...then to top it off I had cramps in my lower tummy general area.....I wanted to try four after hardly running this week and thinking before I got the flu I was in fairly good shape...With all the commotion going on in my body I couldn't concentrate on running and settled for less...then of course near the end I felt sick to my stomach and had to completely stop.

I must not be completely over the flu...does anybody out there know how long it takes to get over it? I'm feeling like I'm never going to feel like myself again....I hate it when I feel that way....

This is in response to your feedback. My tomato plants are huge! They have lots of little tomatoes all over them, well, at least they WOULD if little Adam would stop picking them all. At least they look pretty? Oh well. I'm so glad you all came down with Sasha. The next time I get super sick I'm going to have to have you come down and cook for both our families and watch all the kids while I lounge around and take long naps. Doesn't that sound great? JK

Actually I was driving around this beautiful neighborhood scoping out houses for sale, and I found (drool drool) a largish 4 bedroom ranch on a couple of acres right next to a huge park with a running trail, and it had a little guest house on the grounds with a mini kitchen and bathroom and everything and my first thought was "Wow! If we lived here it would be perfect for having the Pachevs over next time." : )

I have a race tomorrow that I was supposed to train through but I decided to taper a little bit and ran less...also I guess part of me was saving energy for the weed war in our front yard....a little old lady lived here and never really weeded very well..not that we ever weeded perfectly at our old house(well..I think I weeded better when I wasn't pregnant)

I got the garden planted with...are you ready... chives, cucumbers, dill, green beans, peas, peppers, tomatoes and zuchini, I can't spell that ....

I also weeded the entire front yard (not all today....it's taken me like two weeks of a little bit here and a little bit there) and planted petunias around the flag pole and along the lovely cement border by the bushes....

Of course I won't try and keep up the Jones' or that is the Johnson's across the street who probably spent $600 on gorgeous potted elaborate and luxurious combinations of flowers and ivy and whatever they put in those things....It's nice to look at but sheesh...I'll stick with my $10.00 worth of lovely red petunias.....we'll see how they survive my care...

more about running tomorrow after my race..hope it goes well....It will just be a training run since I'm not quite ready to go fast.

My training partner Adrianne raced against Benjamin...he beat her by 34 seconds!! They both ran awesome races and beat me by 5 minutes!!

I was really happy with my race. The first three miles was uphill....I took it easy and didn't have a hard time with it...then on the downhill I had to pace myself from flying through the rest and I felt wonderful....Sasha says it was equal to a PR because of the difficulty of the course. cool...........

I tried to do a tempo run because I was feeling very good today actually.

It's fun to be getting into shape....I think I experienced the perfect Runner's High today....I know why James has that as his blog name...I feel super...I'm thinking clearly and feeling on top of the world...and it's 10:30 at night.

I did the first mile in 10:30 or so and then picked up to 9:10 and then ran the next mile in about 8:30 (Sasha stole The Toy aka Garmin before I could look at my times ). Ended with a 10:00 mile feeling good. The best part is that first I recovered well from my race and second my heart rate was low and relaxed the whole time...yay.....

Hey we must be on at the same time! I just saw your comment and I have to say that I wouldn't put it past you to run Boston someday. Anyone who can juggle all the things you are doing now can probably accomplish anything! But please don't do it pregnant. You'll make all us wussy women (who are incapacitated during pregnancy--like me!) look bad.

What is up with  my crazy body?? Yesterday I felt great...so much energy. Today I needed oxygen or something....I felt 85. I ran two very slow miles this morning and never got my energy back until we had a hearty dinner of meatballs and buckwheat...yum...my kids told me it was the best dinner they'd had in a month.

Then I ran 2 more miles after I dropped the car off at the car shop ....felt pretty lousy but I wasn't surprised...I guess I'm paying for a tempo run yesterday and a great race on Saturday.

So....should I start blogging my organ practice in here like Lybi's piano notes??

I am the ward organist in our little area here in Provo. That means I have the responsibility to prepare three to four hymns 3 Sundays a month..the other organist only plays once...no fair but they are trying to give me more experience...or more heart attacks.

I don't like playing in front of people. I always called myself a closet piano player...didn't want anyone to know that I could do it. So of course Sasha has to tell the bishopbric in this ward that I play the organ (our first Sunday there). By the first ward activity I had a new calling.

I practiced 25 minutes today...worked on a prelude number and  two of the hymns for next Sunday.

I was also working on a T-shirt design for my mom and dad today. I had all the kids smear their little hands with fabric paint and plaster their handprints on shirts for my parents. I'm gonna write a message that says, " Hands Down...World's Greatest Grandma/ Grandpa.

I've noticed that I feel more tired the day after running well, too. That's why I usually do 3 miles one day, 2 the next.

Blog your organ practice if it'll help you do it. I'll care! I need to get off my duff and start putting in more serious practice time. I just ordered some awesome new music--can't wait to get started on it.

You know what I really need to blog is when I get to bed. I really need help reigning in the old bedtime. I got into a bad pattern of staying up late when James was gone and I'm still not back to normal. They say it takes 3 weeks to develop a good habit. But somehow it only takes 3 days to acquire a bad one!

Cute T Shirt design. I keep waiting for someone to make a "Short Pride" T shirt. I know I'd buy one! On the back--picture 3 short stick figures carrying a tall stick figure with the moving slogan "Short People Unite!"

Today was much better. I felt pretty good and got a lot done around the house.

Adrianne has a sore hip....Sasha thinks it's a nerve...Anyway, she's worried she won't be able to run with it...I may lose my training partner....I hope not...not that I'm starting to run more miles.

We took turns pushing her baby again today. She's way faster than me without him but I'm actually a little better at pushing it. Except on hills..she's better on hills with and without the stroller. It's interesting to see what different bodies can do.

Benjamin is kicking me off so he can do his blog....

Adrianne wore her "Junior High" shorts to go with the theme we had chosen for our long run on Saturday...only we didnt' do a long run because it got late and she's been having hip problems and we called it good at almost 4.

We had plans to tell stories about Junior High...She told me about the crush she had on...uh...forgot his name and how she lied about his locker being hers and told the office it was broken and she couldn't get into it so she could put presents in it on his birthday.

We shared some camp stories....I told her about the time I almost broke my back when I was climbing on top of a telephone pole as part of a Ropes course. I jumped off funny (we had harnesses on to catch us) and hit the pole with my back on the way down.

Luckily I hit the muscle on my back and did not injure my spinal cord.

She told me about her most embarassing moment in Junior High when she volunteered to sing in front of her entire eigth grade class and squeaked on all the high notes of "You are My Sunshine"

I told her about the time I was almost kidnapped as a child. I was out early in the morning closing my back gate and was picked up by a man waiting behind the fence for me....I've gotten over it mostly but please DON"T honk at me while I'm on my run....I have a horrible startle reflex. I also really hate it when people jump out from behind anything and scare me....especially fences but walls work too....My brother delighted in doing this to me often while we grew up.

Next long run we are moving onto High School stories although we may have to revisit Junior High because I don't think we really covered it completely....

I hear you. You have to run it like a relay, except that instead of the baton you end up passing off kids. Summer is tricky. Maybe 2 shorter runs or treadmill is what I'm thinking for me.

tempo run 8:41 and 8:06....best part was that I felt really good on the last half and did a 1:58 and then 1:54 quarter ......even better I wasn't tired today after the run..it's that part of running that gets to me...although Sasha says I'm probably tired from something else and I just blame it on my run....any takes on that?

I'm going to kill Sasha!! He's got me on a 4 mile a day diet and I hate it...okay...had to vent. I know it's good for me and I'm okay with it..I"ve just been tired again today and my nervous system shut down. I feel fine now and have all sorts of projects on my mind that I can't wait to do. I've embarked on making all five of my little cherubs matching pajamas. I'll make easy shorts and tops for them out of midnight blue with silver stars. They will look adorable....i can't wait to get started.

How brave of you to embark on such a big sewing project! I have to admit that I haven't touched the sewing machine since you left, except to put it back into it's home-deep in the dark recesses of my closet, where it can cause me the least amount of guilt.

I think I'll handle the four miles a day well if I cut down my tempo runs to nine minute mile pace instead of 8....I've just been too dead the day after to function as supermom....every mom is a supermom I believe.....reading stories, cleaning, nuturing...all the things we do each day.

Hi Sarah- fun to read your comment on my blog (about the heat) I'm feeling whimpy! I'm hoping I just need to re-adjust to St. George. I lived down here for a few yrs. then moved up north, then recently moved back down here again. He he. I actually can't bring myself to do it. I'll have to choose other consequences. I am STILL really struggling with getting to bed on time too. I think I just really crave down time--and that just doesn't happen during the day light hours for a mommy. I'm going to bed NOW. It is 10:30. I will be up and on the road/treadmill tomorrow by 6:15.

P.S. You're starting to make 4 miles sound really easy . . .

From Maria on Sat, Jun 02, 2007 at 10:30:14

I think you shouldn't force the distance. If you feel good going 4, but no longer, let it be until one day you feel really good and want to go farther (and it doesn't have to be Saturday!). You're doing great, and you have to consider everything else you're doing daily which amounts to extra mileage, I'm sure, as opposed to someone like me, who goes to work, sits on her butt most of the day, goes home and runs. Housework and being a mom is a very demanding job!

It took me awhile to join because I knew I would become immediately addicted to this site. You and Sasha have done a great job with this and it is a fun and useful training tool as well as way to socialize. As far as Sandra also joining goes, I mentioned it to her and we'll see. She has been very busy. She took over a year off of running since she was pregnant and is just getting back into it. Also, she has been busy at church with some outreach programs. I'll let you know that you asked about her joining though.

About piano methods. Bastien is a relatively quick paced method for young kids. The music is corny, but it does a great job of teaching kids intervals, which is so awesome for good reading skills. I sometimes put 9-11 year-olds right into Bastien, if they are the kind to practice songs even if they don't like the particular piece.

My favorite for kids 6-9 is Faber & Faber Piano Adventures. Songs are VERY CUTE, plus they often have duets for the teacher to play that sound really cool. Fun to play with your kids AND it teaches them to keep a steady beat. It is pedagodically very sound--based on really good research about how kids learn. I don't like the theory and technic for Faber, though. What I usually do is use a theory and technic book from Bastien, and the lesson and performance book from Faber. In general, I think getting a piano teacher for your kids is advisable. Even I am going to take Sam to a different teacher sometime in the next year, when I feel he is ready dig in. But I'm sure you would do a good job too. I know it can be expensive when you have lots of kids!

If Sasha was my student, I would put him in the Accelerated Piano Adventures (lesson book) for the older beginner.

Very cool music. He might go right into book 2, depends on his counting. He'd need a theory book. I like Snell Theory for my adults. Make sure he starts in the preparatory level--it moves really fast!

From Lybi on Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 15:44:31

I've never used Pace, but if that is what you are familiar with, it might be the best choice.

From Lybi on Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 13:12:39

Hey Sarah! I can understand the van door and the swamp cooler, but HOLY MOLY call out the troops!!! It is a level 1 emergency when the garbage disposal stops working. Ours broke last year and within a 12 hour period we had dished stacked precariously at least a full foot higher than the lip of the sink. AAAAHHH! I don't know why they can't invent a garbage disposal that can handle choking on a dishrag without breaking... (It was probably weakened by many run-ins with baby spoons). Hope you slept better last night. And, of course, fabulous job on your run as usual.

From sarah on Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 16:13:15

thanks gals...I am sure our garbage disposal was ready to die when we bought the house..I knew there would be problems but I didn't anticipate eveything going at once...okay there are lots of things that still work ....I'll focus on that...

Lybi...I saw your comment on MikL's blog about how cool it is that she's bumping up her mileage so fast...I felt a little envious myself. Sasha tells me to run steady everyday and not bump mine up to fast so I'll listen to him. Also you have to remember you are a mom with three little guys who may not let you recover after a 6 or 8 mile run...I think you are building a good solid base and in a couple of months you'll be able to go longer

super sad news today....A guy I knew in Russia died in a motorcycle accident...I personally don't like motorcycles..my dad nearly died in an accident as a teenager and taught me to fear them....my mom taught me to fear dogs....anyway....I think the worst part of the whole story is that he was married to this great girl I knew from Russia(they were missionaries while I was living there as a teenager.  They had six kids together...I feel so badly for the kids....super sad...sorry to depress anyone who may already be down.

My kids and Sasha marched in the Grande Parade in downtown Provo. I made Russian costumes for the girls and some friends also and they represented Russians who have found freedom in America. Our float..made by members of our Stake won and award for best entry by and non-profit organization. It was a mountain with an eagle on top.

I ran two miles at home and then ran with the stroller....in the heat back and forth from the parade. We had a perfect day yesterday. It was fun with lots of fun family memories that I hope will stay with my kids their whole lives. Alot of my days I think about the memories that my kids will have of that day. Of course there are days where mom is mad or just not really all there but usually I try and make the day something I want my kids to remember. I'm probably an expert at that as much as Sasha is at running.....he doesn't really handle the memory department but works hard to teach our kids consistency and discipline.

I have that lethargic feeling I get every once in awhile tonight...not because I'm tired but because I'm horribly bored and in need of adult contact but can't really think of a way to get any. Then Adrianne and I ran out about another mile and turned around and then ran home.....so it was close to four but hard to say exactly....

I've been feeling really good on my runs the last couple of days..I've been having that great feeling of wanting to go faster and longer...usually have to get back to the babies and can't go anymore but it's a good feeling after months of trying to get back into shape....

Hey Sarah! Thanks for your comment! I really do enjoy track meets, because they make me feel 15 again. Besides, it's fun to run fast :). I just love the track atmosphere, and I don't find it boring watching. I even enjoy watching my daughter's swim meets, and they involve hours of waiting (or watching other kids) for her 1 min. or 30 sec. race!

Adrianne and I planned on going on a special last run in the next few days...she's moving to Iowa in a couple of weeks but will be at family renunions for most of it.

She wants to celebrate my birthday early so we are going to run to Great Harvest early one morning and have a nice thick slice of bread there for breakfast together.

had a great day with my brother and his family. We went to the Bean Science Museum and the what my kids and I call "The Coolest Park" It's this HUGE like 5,000 sq feet or more park made entirely out of wood....like one giant kid fort.

It was hot but the kids ended up having a great time anyway.

If you haven't been to one of these yet you are in for a treat if you ever get to go....(better with kids of course)..Ours has two floors of the best fanatasy play you can imagine..from kid sized grocery stores to a helicopter on the roof they could play and dream for hours..it was especially fun being there with all of the cousins (except 2 of the 23 total)

Hilarious thing happened today...I run with a lady named Adrianne who I've mentioned several times. We have also run a couple of times with Stephanie who is known on the blog as BYU Cougar Gal. Adrianne and I have met at 7:30 for months now and she is very dependable and wouldn't change her mind about running unless something really unusual happened. So this morning when I got a  phone call right before walking out the door to meet Adrianne I was disappointed when my friend on the line said that she was already on the trail and to not meet her today because she was trying to get done early.

Then imagine my surprise to walk by Adrianne's house 2 minutes later (she lives around the corner) and to see her already home.

I said, "Oh..you are done already?" She looked at me when a confused look and said, 'Are you going without me?" Then I looked at her with an even more confused look as I realized that she was not the person I talked to this morning....it was BYU Cougar Gal calling to make sure we knew not to meet her today...I thought it was Adrianne...and Adrianne thought I was crazy....but it sure was fun to get the details all sorted out as we ran off into the morning sun together...

accomplishments for the week so far non-running related...got our yard edged for the first time with a hand powered edger or whatever they are called until my neighbor across the street took pity on me and finished up with his gas-powered edger....he also weed wacked some weeds up front which I FINALLY killed off..yay!

Then the other great thing I did was get all of the computer stuff out of our closet upstairs and get a shoe organizer so our closet is finally organized....we had one of those over the door ones for a while but I really like the one we have now...it needs floor space though and we do have that.

Sasha did great on the marathon as all of you know I'm sure but it was fun to be there and watch him come in third..Thanks again to Clyde for helping him out at the end..got to meet Mik'L so that was really fun too!!

I have had a pretty rough week. I've had a lot of rough weeks in my life..this one has just been different. There are some problems in my family that I can't talk about but anybody out there reading this please pray for me and my family..

On top of it the little family I'm in charge of has been sick with fevers, tummy aches and one big grand case of Mastitis for Mom...hence the zero miles for today. I will be grateful for the ability to run again next week. I think I'm going to take tomorrow off too and get a really really good rest.

I'm grateful now for the trials I go through in life...mostly because it's a sink or swim operation I've realized. I don't like sinking so I swim and I get stronger and smarter and nicer and everything.

On the bright side of things my baby is turning 1 tomorrow...although I have planned a huge crying fest...I can't believe it went by so fast. He isn't walking yet but he stands for a few seconds and leans towards us thinking about taking his first step.

Oh Sarah, what a lot you have on your plate! I will pray for your family. Oh, mastitis is the worst thing in the world. I hate it! Plus sick kids! :( I know what you mean about your baby growing up. Adam has started flinging himself out of his crib, so we had to put him in a toddler bed. So we finally put that crib away, and I just about cried. This is the first time in 6 years that I haven't had a baby in the house--all rough and tumble little boys now.

i thought for a few seconds about doing 5 today but my laziness one...or maybe my common sense...I have a lot to do when I get home as we all do but I've decided 5 little kids makes me a tiny bit busier with a bit more stressful work than some of you out there....I'm battle weary today....and many days from trying to get things done while my two year old yells at me. He doesn't handle mommy being busy very well but I'm not willing to give up my project time when he's napping to do my chores then so I do them in the morning when he is awake but he is very unhappy that I'm not sitting and entertaining him. I read to him every day before he takes his nap and try to be very patient with him when he's awake but the constant screaming is wearing me out...blah blah blah.

Sasha bought this book about how to be miserable and one of the things in it(it's a joke but the reverse psychology works) anyway...one of the suggestions is to complain about your blessings...I guess complaining about my children falls under that catergory so I won't...just gotta figure out how to be patient when I'm weary..fun fun.

I ran a little bit more than four today but didn't measure it exactly. I ran into a friend and wanted to run with her further instead of having to stop talking. As a result I was STARVING all day today. I ate a sandwich at 11:00 and then had to go to the  store with 6 kids to get more bread because I was still hungry. Then around 3 when everyone was asleep I hid in my room so nobody could see me and make me make them another sandwich (I was ravenous and not thinking straight...has this ever happened to any of you real runners out there who push your bodies all the time. I know it happens to Sasha but sometimes I think he's just making it up so I'll bake him some cookies....

I felt totally hyper today...I guess all those sandwiches yesterday did the trick. I ran faster than normal but of course don't know the time since I come from the run how you feel school of thought....I used to get mad at Sasha when he wanted me to wear a watch...now I wish I could just remember to put it on when I go out the door because I would be interesting to know

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
4.000.004.00

I felt a little slow on the first part of the run and felt like putting the last two miles off until the night..that plan was vetoed by Sasha so I went for two more. I actually felt fast and great on those last two miles. I started feeling light and faster a couple of weeks ago before I had a round of mastitis. It took me about a week and a half to feel like that again but looks like it's coming back.

Now for all of you out there that don't know the real story of fast running mommy here it is...I actually am a convert to running .I prefered swimming, biking, or just sitting on the couch. Sasha convinced me (tricked me) to start running when he told me that Hawk Harper's 3 year old daughter Summer could run a half mile in under 4 minutes. Of course I thought that if Summer could do it I'd have no problem. Well, 3:57 was my time earned with beating heart and aching legs. I was won over to the cause of getting myself in shape and had a lot of fun doing it at first. I loved seeing my times get faster and enjoyed the closeness it brought into our relationship. At least it helped Sasha stop trying to talk to me about computers..he could talk to me about running now and that was much more fun.

Now 8 years into the sport I can't honestly say that I'll ever love it as much as Sasha but I do feel that I am a runner. I've run through 3 pregnancies...even in labor once. I've run in the ran, snow, hail and sleet. I've run when most people wouldn't think of being outside in freezing sub zero temperatures. I can't say I love it but I can say that I love the results. I love being trim, I love having people stare when I say I have five children and I love feeling light and fast.....Most of all, I love this blog and the positive influence it has been in many people lives. Thank you all for being part of it.

Mastitis = Youch!! I had that a few times, and it feels like you got hit by a train! Good for you to blog about running in pregnancy. There are so many myths out there. I ran until about a month before my daughter was born. I only stopped running because she was breach, and I was having trouble getting enough nutrients (her head was pressing on my stomach). I didn't want a thin baby. I ran 10 miles the last run I did. It is all about listening to your body, the baby, and staying hydrated.

Summer Harper is a fast running girl, Alexander has competed with her in some USATF races

Liked your blog, good positive comments on benefits to run

Youre lucky to have Sasha come and take the kids for a stroll after running 20 miles - I collapse after 10 miles yet alone 20

From sarah on Mon, Aug 06, 2007 at 23:51:05

I've never run 10 miles pregnant but I think that you are in shape to run 10 miles then it is okay. I usually keep my four or five miles a day until the last couple of months I gradually cut down to 2 a day. The one thing that does change right away is my times get slower by 1 minute per mile right away...usually a sure sign for me that I'm pregnant.

I've actually "run" all the way up until I deliver (even in labor once and once a couple of days before to get myself to go into labor...which of course didn't work). I slow down to like a 14 minute mile and am pretty much putting along those last couple of weeks but I'm moving.

I totally forget stuff when I leave the house for just the same reason.8) How old is your baby? Mine is almost 14mo, now. She is still nursing alot, though, and sleeping in her crib in our room, so she still feels like a baby to me. She loves to play w/ her siblings and explore, so she does not need as much attention as she used to.

Race: Provo River Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 00:02:08
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

I didn't do an amazing job today but felt really really good about the race. It's kind of funny all the things that could possibly go wrong did(well almost). I had to stop for a bathroom trip in the bushes around mile 1. This maybe took 3 minutes or so because I also got covered with about 200 burrs!!!! ACCK!! They were even up my shorts and in my socks..so then I had to stop and get them off...this was time consuming too but I could not run with burrs up my pants...I'm sorry....

Things went well for the next five miles or so..found  friend and chatted...then hit a lovely mile uphill with headwind and I couldn't keep up with the three fat guys that were running in front of me and acting as a nice wall...

Then I was okay until about mile 8 when I needed to make an URGENT bathroom stop. I was so distracted about it that I didn't take any powerade at the water stop. So after wasting some more time in the restroom I had a blood sugar crash. I knew it was a blood sugar crash and kept plugging along while I pondered what I could do.

1. Wait for the next aid station.

2. Ask a stranger to please give me a little tiny bite or sip of anything they had to help me feel better...it was really that desperate but I was still too shy to ask.

3. Find an edible plant and eat ....thought about sunflower leaves...I've actually studied a bit about herbs and knew they are okay but didn't really want to find out what they'd do to my body at that point.

Sasha showed up around mile 10 and ran with me until the water station. He helped alot by getting me three cups and carrying one until I was ready for  it. Then he ran with me the rest of the race. The powerade worked and I felt fanastic from then on. I picked it up but 8:30 pace and faster and held it for the rest of the race. Finished strong...didn't eat sunflower leaves and felt overall good about the race.

Way to go, Sarah! 2:08 is a very respectable time, but minus all your bathroom breaks, it's closer to 2:00! Also, you ran it without doing any long runs, on only 4 miles a day - really good. Sasha is so supportive, you're lucky. I can't get my husband to even come to any of my races, let alone run with me, it's all so boring to him.

I think you have TOTALLY earned a break. It isn't requisite that a WOman should run more than she has strength!

Is the honey sandwich for tiredness or a mood pick-up, or what?

School started here in Mesa, today. Do you have one or two children starting school soon? Or do you homeschool? I can't remember... My 4yo thought that her day would be endless fun (since bro & sis got to go to school) and was sad when we came home from Lybi's house & the store. :P She only had two little sisters to play with, then. hehe

my eleven year old daughter had some medical issues at the begining of the summer (which is not the first time we have had this. She was born with arthrogryposis-a joint disorder-and has spent alot of time in and out of the hospital, but has been doing really good scence her back surgery 2 years ago) she just had another sugery a week ago. I also have had some personal termoil of my own with a very good friend, but I hope that can work itself out. And I hve had a calf and siatic issue for the past 6 weeks that has put a stop to my running. But I know these times pass and only make us stronger. I also play the flute and piano, I am better at the flute. I sew and paint as well. You have a cute little family. I am impressed you can keep up the running.

By the way, where is the search tool on the blog? Can't seem to find it, Sasha also mentioned some kinda way to find a distance on a 5k I ran once can't seem to find that either? Maybe I'm just blind!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 18:23:24

Michelle - the search box is on the right side of this page. The Course Tool appears when you log in, there is a link to it on the left side.

Also - Sarah got it wrong. I did not think that a skunk was a plant. I just did not recognize the smell, and thought that it came from some exotic tropical plant (I first smelled skunk in the LA area). Then I was surprised to find the same tropical plant smell in Utah, and thought that was rather odd.

Sarah, we must make the best of every opportunity to taunt Sasha about this! No actually, we should sympathize. The first time I smelled my husband after a run, I thought it was some horrible freak-of-nature plant too.

Michael has set the record straight and you guys aren't going to believe it but there is a bush that grows in the west that has a bad smell if you mess with it called...you'll never guess...that's right....a Skunk Bush. If you don't believe me ask Michael who is now the official skunk expert of the website.

Well..between Mik 'L and Sasha I pretty much had to run more today...but I didn't do that much more. I have to say that I do run fairly fast on my runs and didn't know it. My time was 48:48 (fun). Almost everytime I looked at the Garmin I was running quarters between 2:18-2:25. I was pleasantly surprised to see this. I was hoping to get up to no slower than 2:28 a quarter but I was already there...which I suspected but wasn't sure about because I never took the Garmin with me..yay!

Well, I've decided to make a break from 4 miles a day and start doing five. Mik'L was right....it is a good time while my mother-in-law is here...for two reasons. She is there to feed the kids when they wake up if they are hungry and she helps with things during the day so I can rest more if I need to. I felt pretty good today...I didn't time it but felt like I did 2:18's again for part of it but probably mostly slower today as I didn't have a watch to push myself.  I think for me people can't really push me to run faster..if I'm tired I'll tell them to please slow down...I've got to save some of myself for my day ahead with my kiddos (mostly the 1 and 2 year old wear me down with demands...the older ones are very sweet and helpful).

For a moment I considered not going five but I really wasn't that tired and talked myself into it. I'm so glad I did. I actually got my best time of the week and it felt easier than Monday. I think it was because on Monday I was surprised that I was running 2:18's and didn't do it every time. Today I ran them a little bit more consistently and got a bit faster time. I saw Sasha on the trail and almost demanded that he stop and kiss me(he was in the middle of an interval and all I got was a nod...sigh...)

My time was 48:10...felt great.

I've had some problems this week that haven't really effected my running but was up on and off last night and didn't want to push it today..I think the code word some ladies use is Aunt Flo...She's visited me twice this month and it's been rough.

You are AMAZING! 9 minute miles for 5 miles! That's awesome.

I went back and read all of your blogs from this year. It made me smile. I love how you talk about other parts of your life besides running. And I feel really good about how far we've come since February. I know I only ran three today, but I hope to do a long run and a tempo run every week. Only with you could I run the same route again and again. You know me and my need for variety. I am back to making up weird running routes. I miss your company. I feel so slow. There are tons of mini-hills--like the ones under the bridges on our old four mile route.

Seriously, we've come a long way since February. We are wracking up the miles!

I found a 10 mile race. It's at the end of September. I wanted to do a half, but all the ones I have found are on Sunday. I am glad you feel good. Talk to you later.

From sarah on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 23:29:54

No...it's not defined by time or speed or anything. A true runner...I think we should all submit poems or essays to be judged by the committee and the best one is posted on the blog under News/Special Announcements...I do think of myself as a true runner. I train everyday, I eat so I can run well, I don't feel good unless I have got my run in for the day, I've run through three pregnancies and I want to run..On the other hand I respect those who have the dedication like our husbands and others on the blog to never stop reaching their limits(I guess we are doing the same thing)....I'd like to know what everyone else thinks about it...

Sasha gave me a great kiss today...nice when grandma is home with the babies and you can meet for a nice morning run. Except after that he kept getting in trouble with me for looking at his watch. I left mine at home and just wanted to run easy today after yesterday's race against the clock game. In some ways I think today should earn me more points than yesterday because I ran the 5 miles even when I was tired from the day before.

Well, I really wanted to do a semi fast run today. My time for 3.89 miles was 36:52 and then my watch stopped working ....and so did I. The worst was that I was sooo tired this morning that I had to rest. I hate taking naps because it messes up my to do list. Of course my kids actually like it when I'm tired because it's much easier to catch a mommy that isn't moving. I lay down in the middle of my beautiful living room...right on top of the oriental rug imported from somewhere that I can't remember (my mom bought it in Russia but I think it was made elsewhere...anyway)...AND I didn't move a muscle while my babies crawled on top of me and I drifted off to rebuild muscle land and felt much better when I got up.

I probably ran the last mile in about 11:40 is my guess...I slowed down to a crawl..I've got to find a good balance. I don't like being wasted after a run but I guess  a little nap didn't hurt me or the carpet.

So I thought yesterday's run was bad when I could only run 9 minute mile pace for most of the run...today's was worse..I had the courage however to not turn off the Garmin and face my time like a ...uh...woman...Anway....I didn't push myself at all and ran 12 minute miles the whole time. The deal Sasha and I have is that I keep the mileage up and go what pace I want. I couldn't be trashed again today like I was yesterday. I have a kinda busy schedule during the day and I want to be there for my kids...not falling asleep. So I feel good about my run today but kind of sad that I'm not in the shape to run 9 minute miles every day.

Sara,

It's my ten yr. old that would like her own blog. She doesn't do much running and so it would take me going with her, which is great. Just finding the extra time and energy is hard. But I know developing the habits of good health at an early age is very important so I should really put forth the effort! Maybe if she had her own blog it would make ME more accountable to her. By the way what would be a good amount of distance to start out with her? I really don't know what is best for her to keep her motivated and having fun, while estabilshing a routine?

By the way, I'd take 9 minute miles anytime I could get them and be thrilled! You are entitled to a little R&R! (If that's what you call running 5 miles a day and then keeping up with being the mom to five chilren is...keep up the great work!) :)

From Michelle on Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 23:20:29

From Bonnie on Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 11:41:13

Hello Sarah -

Thank you so much for your welcome message! I look forward to meeting you soon.

Don't think about the pace -- as hard as it is -- just think about how you feel and how long you are supposed to run that day, and run the pace that allows you to do that. It will pay off, you will feel stronger every day.

I know I was always comparing how slow I am compared to Dean (who is 48 and has been running competitively for 35 years). Now I just get over it and run my own runs. It really helps that he is very supportive of me (despite how slow I am comparitively ;-) ) ... we are all at our own levels!

I hope you have a wonderful Labor Day weekend! Good luck to Benjamin on his race!

Well I am very happy to say that I've run  5 miles every day this week. It's actually been a goal of mine for a long time to get back to 5 miles a day. I was so excited by my times last week because I felt like I'd gotten back in the shape I was in before I had Julia. Before I had my third child Julia I was a bubbling young thing bursting with energy and usually pretty happy with life. I ran 5 miles a day averaging 9 min miles and didn't tire from it. I felt really good about life and didn't have many other goals beyond what I had.  After Julia was born I had a hard time.  I was definitely not happy with my life or my sudden change in my energy level. I dragged through my days and had a hard time finding the energy and desire to take care of three little kids.  I have learned a lot since then (Julia is almost 5)...one thing is that the energy problem was due to me having undiganosed hypothryoidism and  a personality that didn't know how to relax admist the serious responsibility of three little kids. I've learned how to manage my stress and I can usually deal with life when I have no energy without going into a serious depression over it.  So in a sense for me to be able to get back to that level that I was at before I had Julia would mean a lot to me personally and I'm excited that I'm half way there. I've figured out how to do 5 miles a day again but I can't figure out how to go faster without getting tired the next day..sigh...I guess 5 kids may slow me down a bit but I'm not ready to give up yet.

From sarah on Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 23:56:22

Wow...it was kind of fun when I logged in and saw the calendar full of empty spaces to fill....I'm sure this next month holds challenges but it also holds excitement fun and of course miles to run and blog. We ran tonight because we took the kids to the zoo today after Sasha's victory at his race this morning. He is in really good shape. I'm happy to say that he only ran 90 more miles than me this week...okay okay it was really 91...help...what am I going to do with this man? He made the time to go to the zoo with us this morning although after only seeing the elephant show he innocently looked at me and said, "Should we go?" I talked him into seeing the tiger and the alligator and whatever we saw on the way...it was fun. Then we ran together tonight and had time for a 2 minute date on the the big swing someone set up on a giant tree limb. He also gave me a great kiss!! It made it feel like a date and was very romantic. So admidst 121 miles he still managed to go on an outing with his family(he also stopped by an educational store with the kids and bought them prizes for doing well on their runs lately) and have a date with his wife...what a man!!

Well, you know that I am super impressed! Was it the double jogger or the single? This is probably a blog record for females running with a jogging stroller. Great job! The Pachevs all seem to be setting records right now. Excellent!

Well guys..not that I don't LOVE the praise and all but my super beloved Adrianne(crumpybl) has us all beat and I think LuLu too.

From Lulu on Wed, Sep 05, 2007 at 06:57:00

Sarah, thanks for the compliment. I've been buried in life lately and haven't been too active here. I think of the stroller as adding a strength component to the workout. I certainly used to really feel it in my hamstrings. Now it is not such a big deal anymore. I did do speed work last week in the hills with the stroller I didn't wear a watch. It is getting easier and I think I am getting faster with the stroller. I hope you find it a great time to run with your babies! Congrats on all your five milers!

From Bonnie on Wed, Sep 05, 2007 at 11:17:39

It is easy for me to be dedicated, I don't have nearly as many pulls on my time. Even though I have a fairly stressful job, Dean and I have very little else to worry about (except the animals and compared to 5 children they are easy!).

I am happy that both you, and Sasha, have such supportive spouses (and children)!!

Lybi: You are too sweet....of course we would love to come to St. George...are you guys bringing the kids...we are debating what we are doing....I'm excited for you to actually meet some people...is Brent going to be there...I know you really wanted to meet him in Provo. Sorry that was a disappointment. I hope St. George makes up for it.

From Lybi on Wed, Sep 05, 2007 at 23:42:17

My sweet mother is watching our kids, so we will be footloose and carefree. This whole thing is a mega-date for us (with a little running on the side, I guess). At least that is it from my perspective. To him it is probably a mega-run with a little wife on the side. He he.

From Michelle on Fri, Sep 07, 2007 at 10:30:17

This shows great strength that you can do this stroller running. When I lived in Tucson, AZ, it was flat and I sued to run with a stroller, but when I moved to Utah I realized there are hills in every run, which are magnified with a jogging stroller. I haven't jogged with a jogging stoller in Utah because it poops me out!

Thanks for calling today! I hope you have a great weekend. How's the organ going? I have only practiced four times since we moved here. I think I will pick a piece to play for our Christmas Eve talent show. We are going to my parents in Ohio for Christmas. The talent show is one of my mother's favorite parts of Christmas. For Lars's talent, he will spin a basketball on his finger. He can spin the ball on all his fingers, even his thumb. Well, I better pick out the piece I'll play and get practicing. You have to prepare in advance for these things. Have a great night, Sarah.

I felt stronger today than I have all week. I didn't feel like timing it quite yet though...got to get where I am not going to push myself too hard if I have the watch on. I met a friend on the trail that has  a new dog that is dragging her through her runs at 8:00 min mile pace...poor thing was worn out. One more week and it's officially a habit...or is that 21 days and it's a habit..well..I think 6 days a week of 5 miles a day counts. I am handling it well except that I can't run quite as fast as I want. I'm trying to just listen to my body. Sometimes I think I'm doing pretty well and then when I'm tired I slow down and take it easy...I just wish I didn't have to slow down but I can't wear myself out on my runs. I have no time for naps when I get home and need to be a little energizer bunny to make it cheerfully through my day.

I had a weird thing happen on my run today. Ted...I hope you don't get mad when I tell the part of the story that involves you...I'm not upset I just think it was funny....anyway...I had a really bad blood sugar crash today. I saw Ted and hoped he'd send Sasha back for me when I told him I wasn't doing well. Luckily I found some wild plums that gave me the energy to get back home in a normal amount of time (ie...running not walking). The thing that Ted may be in trouble for is that when I got back nobody was rushing to my aid...they were talking about...can you guess? Running I'm sure. Oh...those two..I don't know how Elizabeth and I put up with you. Anyway, it was funny. I did feel terrible and would have loved some food or some help but I made it home fine and had a good laugh when I saw those two boys just standing there talking.

In ted's defense(if such a thing is possible) when he went by you and saw you weren't doing well he thought you said something about blisters not blood sugar. So I suppose deafness or total unawareness is his excuse.

I had a really good run today 47:43 for 5.05. Yay! And the best part was is that it didn't feel too fast. I've figured that pretty much I don't have enough time to rest during the day from running "faster than I have strength" I can run fast only if it feels fairly easy to me.

I've had an upsetting day. The dentist is going to pull Jenny's molar because it abcessed...I really don't like dental stuff and we've had plenty of problems with our kids teeth..I'm blaming that on Sasha since he has foreign teeth so that must mean there is something wrong with them ...right(just kidding honey)...I don't have perfect teeth either so it just must be a bad mix...Ah well...they are awfully cute kids so I guess you can't get it all.

Sarah- No problem on staying at my parents house for the marathon. In fact, you will have the house to yourselves (and probably a few other bloggers) because both my parents will be out of town (and there are no kids left at home). My mom is actually moving to China for 2 months and my dad will be at a golf tournament until Sunday night. I think Steve and Ted might be crashing there as well, but there is lots of room so no worries. My mom said it was fine as long as everyone cleans up after themselves and changes the sheets! We are having the blog party there, so if your hands are kid-free, you can help us get the pasta ready! Oh- and Clyde said you may want to stay until Monday, which is fine.

Elizabeth (armyrunner's wife) and I ran five miles today. I pushed the stroller and it totally wore me out..I feel like such a wimp compared to all you who do it every day.

I think my hormones are off because I am feeling totally grouchy. I sent Sasha off to  TOU with a fit about how running is ruining my life or something along those lines. I think he may have said some kind of comment about the dishes or something that can really bother a woman already feeling on the edge. Anyway...we have of course made up and all is well again but it's kind of funny how one thing can send you over the edge when you aren't feeling yourself.  I've been getting headaches every afternoon. I need to go and see the doctor and get my thyroid medication again. I ran out and have been putting off going unitl I get pregnant again ( which could be soon) because they will redraw my blood when I'm pregnant and try to tweak the medication all over again....so..why get poked twice was my reasoning....but the thryoid problems could be causing the headaches so I may have to just get my body over there.

A very exciting thing happened today....I got to meet Alexander and Michael Barry finally at a cross country meet Benjamin ran in. I usually am home taking care of the little ones but Sasha was gone so I decided to take him. It was nice to meet both of you in person.

I couldn't get my run in this morning because I had to get Benjamin to the meet earlier than I could get an hour worth of running in before. so.....Sasha and I (who ran a marathon) ran with the kids and then finished my 5 miles together tonight. I actually had to make him slow down for me a couple of times. Amazing....

49:23 was my time tonight which is good for an end of the day run. Last mile was 9:24...felt really good and feel nice and happy and headache free today.

Sasha's friend Hoby Call  finally got a great time on the Marathon...2:16...(something). We are so happy for him. Maybe we'll convert him to the blog and you can all meet him and see his amazing training regiment and life....we'll see.

Sorry to hear about the BS crash. This may be inappropriate as I don't know how old your kids are, but are you still breast feeding? That takes a lot of calories and energy. Make sure you are eating enough and your body isn't in "starvation mode." Also, if you are running in the morning before breakfast, your body is hungry from burning calories all night. I almost always have to eat a couple hundred calories before I run. I hope you get some resolution.

From crumpyb1 on Tue, Sep 18, 2007 at 21:27:43

It was wonderful to hear from you today! I forgot to ask how Jenny's teeth are doing? Were you able to find a washing machine?

It's weird. I use to think I would throw up if I ate before I ran. The one year I ran track (Seventh grade), I ate a skittle right before my race. I put it in my mouth before the voice in my head said, "Wait! You'll throw-up!" I was quite nervous that I was going to be sick during and after my mile race. I think it was that night or even the next day when I realized I hadn't thrown-up. However, I still avoided eating before I ran. The summer before my freshman year of college, I would roll out of bed, run two miles as fast as I could--without warming-up and stretch a little after and then eat breakfast. It wasn't until the first year I was married that if I ate a small amount, I wouldn't throw up. These days I eat two breakfasts. A small one at 6:30/6:45 and then another more normal size about 9/9:30. I don't know how my story of breakfasts will help you, but that's what I do.

Do I need to go to a Health Food store to pick up the kind of oats you eat for breakfast in the morning? I'd like to try them.

I hope you have had a wonderful day.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

This is inaccurate because I had to stop a bit early due to another blood sugar crash...feeling discouraged...plus my vacuum is dead....my washing machine is spitting out a gallon of water from the bottom....my garbage disposal is clogged with millions of potato peels (I never peel my red potato skins off...we just eat them with the skins but Sasha's mom put the peels down the disposal because I didn't know you couldn't have no experience with it myself)

Anyway...serious malfunctions are about to happen in my house tomorrow when the dishes that aren't washed begin to stink, the kids have no underwear and mom is sitting in a corner pretending everything is okay while I plot my escape to Lybi's house (can I come stay for another week?) I'm going to go eat something delicious and get my blood sugar back up..Raisin Bran sounds good. :)

Disclaimer: For anyone wondering about heartfelt advice they could give which I would appreciate...I am not pregnant or starving myself so I can't figure out where the heck these blood sugar crashes are coming from but any advice is welcome.

Yay! Come to my house! You guys really should come down here sometime and womp all over some of these races down here. I think people must be slower in AZ than Utah, based on the times I always see. Plus, if you come down, you can help me get kick started with improving my diet. We'll go to health food stores, and sew a little bit, and sing and play piano-and watch Pride and Prejudice far too many times.

I think that I remember hearing you say that you ran out of your prescription for thyroid medication. Is that related? Have you been to the Dr.? Other things that are good for blood sugar: cinnamon, chromium (usually chromium picolinate), eating every 2 1/2 hours at least, eating a little bit of protein with each meal...Road trips to Arizona.

From josse on Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 16:41:44

I wish I new the anwser to your blood sugar problems, but I think Lybi is right you should probably see your doctor. What I have found is that what works for one person usually doesn't work for another, I was haveing crashes like yours but mine was due to over stressed adrienales ( no suprise). If you have thyriod problems that could be your culpret or maybe it's just stress, life and haveing 5 kids. I find the older we get the more problems arise, but they are all fixalbe its just a matter of getting to the root of the problem. Hope you figure it out.

Hi, Sarah! Have you tried keeping track of what you eat for a few days (I know it's a huge pain:P)? It will help if you go to the Dr (I recommend a Naturopath), because they'll probably ask you WHAT you've been eating. lol Have you been to vegsource.com? They have support groups of all different kinds (including one for nursing -- are you still? I am). Are you taking a B12 supplement? I read a lot of the die-hard, whole food people on there talking about conceding that that was the only supplement they really felt they needed as vegetarians.

As I stare at all the 5 milers from this month I can't help wondering if Mik'L is going to try and convince me to run 6 or 7 or more every once in awhile. I really think I'll be pregnant soon(of course Murphy's Law states I won't) I didn't think I'd have Jacob so soon after Joseph was born but lo and behold we have a darling Jacob. Now that I'm terribly baby hungry I probably won't get pregnant for awhil.  I have never miscarried and wonder if I will. I'm a little anxious about it but figure it is a painful experience (mostly emotionally) that girls go through as they pass on to womanhood. I guess I'm not a real woman yet. But I love the things I've been through and what I've learned that give me what I called on Michelle's blog as Woman Power. You don't have any without passing through a few trials so age is not important..it's what you've learned from what you've been through. Okay...enough philosophy..I'm going to work on a project..have a great Saturday everybody.

Hi Sarah,

It was great to see you this morning! You know, the whole reason I am running a marathon this year is because in the spring I wanted to have a baby but my husband wasn't ready. So I decided I would bear a marathon and have an October 6th due date! I feel inadequate to have more kids, which is a trial of its own in a Mormon community: what kind of woman are you if you can only handle three kids? My best friend, who is not a runner at all, has had miscarriage after miscarriage. I think we all get our unique trials and don't need to knock our own or be overly fearful of ones to come. Just enjoy the little ones you have! How old is your youngest anyway? Give him a kiss on the cheek for me! I am baby hungry too!

From Lulu on Mon, Oct 01, 2007 at 11:49:53

Sarah,

I have been catching up with your blog after not being able to read blogs much lately. I hope your thoughts were just passing thoughts. Of course, I understand baby hunger (took me 8 years and extreme science to have Bubbles) and miscarriage. Love on your kids, and remember that God gives us exactly what we can handle. Take good care of yourself.

I had tons of pent up energy from a very slow and kind of boring Sunday. Although I've told myself time and time again that if I'm bored on Sunday I'm not keeping the Sabbath day holy sometimes I still find myself unmotivated to put on a huge production for my kids and we end up bored....any ideas?

At least I had a great run today...felt super strong..did crash a bit at the end but I found my good ol wild plums that grow along the river and popped in a few for a little bit of extra energy at the end.

From Holly on Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 14:22:48

I am not happy about our Sundays in my own home at the moment. Jeremy says he thinks Gospel instruction only needs to happen during Family Home Evening and that bothers me so much that I feel paralyzed! 'Like there's such a thing as thinking about the Lord TOO much! I wouldn't want to go to too much trouble for Someone who made the world and everything in it for me and then died for me! I worry this reluctance to discuss the Gospel much will make our children even more that way, so that soon they'll get "overloaded" if they hear too much spiritual information at once. It's not what I thought my family with Jeremy would be like at all. He loves to learn and teach about the Gospel! He has five little sponges who instead run around like misbehaving toddlers after church on the Sabbath day, growing dull and more acclimatized to the flat colors and words of the world every day. Ok, now I'm getting upset. laf I already know what my answer is: I need to stop thinking about what I hoped Jeremy would do and do it myself. I need to take a book about a Bible story from the closet, or a Friend magazine, sit down w/ a child or two (maybe more will circle 'round) and show them my own excitement and teach. I need to share my own enthusiasm and love for the Lord and His teachings. They will catch it if I am consistent, and so will Jeremy. I think many of us go through periods when we think we don't have time or don't really NEED to read the Scriptures, but as a parent, I feel I can't afford to make excuses for myself about this. My family suffers from my shrunken soul. After the lesson yesterday in church from General Conference about procrastination (an awesome article, by the way, by Henry B. Eyring called "This Day"), my excuses are not good enough and I'm recommitted to reading every morning.

I don't know if that helps, but those are my thoughts about improving Sunday in my own home.

We just try to spend the time together as a family---we go on walks, play games at home (church related, of course), and so on. The hardest one would be the teenager, but the 4 little ones just love that for one day, after all of the callings are done, we are together (my husband is in school, so he is never home at night). We cook dinner together, read together, just be together.

From crumpyb1 on Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 21:30:50

On Sundays, I always liked it when my dad interviewed me. He'd ask me questions like what was my favorite food, what I wanted to be when I grew up, what I liked best about our family, etc. My brothers, sisters, and I were interviewed one at a time. I don't know if that would be possible. But, you could have a jar of questions and have your kids take turns answering.

You could write down their answers, too.

Memorizing scriptures is fun. And you can make it into a game or Make-up your own sign language to remember the words. (That's what my family did.)

You could also to put together a scripture story play. And invite a neighbor or one of the single sisters over for your audience.

Just a few thoughts. 'Hope they help.

From Christi on Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 13:46:37

Sarah- I appreciated your Sabbath question. I like "Crumpy's" idea of interviewing kids, they love to talk about themselves. At bedtime on Sunday's for our spiritual thought I have my kids tell about what they learned in Primary. It always reminds me of lessons I'd forgotten and the kids like to talk. We usually take a Sunday walk. I also try to get my kids to write letters to grandparents, great grandparents & relatives that are far away. Good luck!

Had to take Jacob to doctor today which for me is about equal to an ER trip. I usually treat most things pretty well with home remedies. He is fine but at the time I was worried because he was breathing strangely and I didn't think he was sick. Turns out he did have a fever and we never did figure out what was wrong with him but by 9:30 tonight he was back to normal....weird.

From Lybi on Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:10:01

My kids often breathe a lot faster when they get a fever. I usually do end up taking them to the Dr. and they always say he's fine, but then one time I took Samuel in with the same symptoms, and he ended up being hospitalized for pneumonia! So it can be scary. Man, I'm sorry! Hope he gets better soon.

BTW, have I told you HOW HAPPY I am that you are coming to St. George!?! This is going to be great. If you want, tell your kids that are learning piano to practice their best song, bring the music and I'll give them each a little mini-lesson. I love to have my students play for other piano teachers. They practice like crazy.

I have an important announcement to make: I have a new running partner. Her name is Amanda and she lives a couple miles away from me....right next to the trail on the other side of town. I am so excited.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Amanda and I ran 4 miles together today. I'm nervous about if we are going to stay running partners or not because she's going to see a doctor about her knee today...what if he says she has to cool the running....first Adrianne...now Amanda. But my life is way richer from knowing Adrianne. I have a hard time finding time to socialize just for me. All of my friends are wonderful but we always have our kids around and are constantly putting out fires while we try to talk. A running partner on the other hand has nothing else to do but tell you wonderful stories or listen to you talk about past and present events.....it is a beautiful thing....

After we ran I added a mile...we averaged just over 10:00 mile pace...like 10:05 or something.....felt brisker than it does by myself..I guess I don't like quick running and talking...I like sleep running and talking....

How cool that you have a new running partner! She is lucky to be able to run with you--you have some great funny stories! Two measly runs with you and she's done for! You're not allowed to be devastated when you loose a running partner unless you've run with her at least 3 times. Just kidding. Hope her knee is OK!

I hope Amanda's knee is okay.

Tomorrow I teach my first lesson in Primary in three years. I am excited. The lesson is on the Pentacost and how the apostles recieved the gift of the holy ghost.

I forgot to finish my run after Amanda and I finished together today but I'm already dressed and ready for the day so maybe I'll add more tonight maybe not. I'm really excited about life because I've started waking up at 5:45 and I've been better about reading scriptures, showering before my kids wake up and having breakfast ready for them...all because I'm getting up an hour earlier and getting my run done while they are asleep. I loved having my mother in law here but I was getting up at 7 or later and not getting home until they were up and eating breakfast already.

Guess what? My neighbor, Jade, and I are going to start a New Testament study group. We are going to read Matthew 1-6 and discuss it next Tuesday. It should be interesting. I imagine I will learn a lot through reading and from her faith.

I'm more organized in the morning and I've noticed that Joseph has been happier the last couple of days. For awhile I was putting him in time outs constantly to deal with his temper tantrums...He hasn't had any at all for the last two days which is a huge breakthrough for him and a huge break for me....

I know why Lybi gets so many comments....she is the official blog cheerleader and everybody loves her. I can't wait to meet all of you...thanks for the comments.

Brent-I can't wait to finally meet you and of course your better half!!

Mik'L I think we are going to leave Provo around 12 so we are going to get into St. George about 4 and probably go to the expo first. I'm sure you'll probably already be at your parents house by the time we make it there...hopefully I'll be some help when we get there. Our cell phone numbers are 372-0470 and 472-7541 (his and hers) thanks again for letting us stay there. It is very kind of your family.

Michelle-my kids will LOVE to play with your kiddo. My 7 year old girl especially loves 10 year old girls. For some reason all of her best friends are 10.

Sasha-Thanks for trying to get me 23 comments. Maybe if I posted on more people's blogs I'd get more comments or if I recruited a million people to the blog...it was sweet..thanks.

From Michelle on Thu, Oct 04, 2007 at 11:46:01

Sara I'm glad that your daughter will enjoy playing with Callzee. Some of her best friends are younger too! Our neighbor across the street has a 12 yr old daughter that she plays with and a 6 yr old daughter. If one can't play she plays with the other. If both can't play and they have a son that is four days younger than her that she plays with. So pretty much with one family they fill all her requirements. It's tough when they go out of town though!

Good job, Sarah! It is so awesome that you are getting up early. That has been my goal for such a long time, but I was never able to do it until I became a runner. Managed to get three miles in and.....a new kitchen table that fits perfectly in our kitchen. All I need know is a little wooden high chair that matches the table and doesn't stick out to much to block the passage to the stairs. I'll be on the look out for one. The way we got the table is from some neighbors that were about to take it to DI and just happened to ask us if we wanted it while I was on my third lap in the rain pushing the double stroller around the block so I could get somewhat of a run it....see running does pay. It was a huge blessing but not as big as the blessing that our dearest friend Ted or Army Runner is alive and well and can go on running and living a normal life....read his blog for details. We may not have all made our goals this year but at least we are here still progressing. My heart goes out to all of you who didn't make the time you wanted and my cheer goes up for those who did. We love you all

From crumpyb1 on Tue, Oct 09, 2007 at 23:16:13

A quick story I wanted to share. Thanks again for talking to me today.

Today was my first Bible Study with Jade; it was wonderful. We read Matthew 1-6 before hand and then today we Shared our thoughts and feelings. It was awesome. For example, we talked about Peter walking on the water and how Christ was there in front of him and still Peter doubted. I briefly talked about Laman and Lemuel and how they were visited by angels and they still rebelled from God. And then I mentioned President Eyring's talk and how he looked for God's hand in each day of his life. And by looking for God's hand, President Eyring's faith and gratitude in God grew. So then I wondered out loud to Jade, if I was like Peter. Heavenly Father is all around me, to give me the faith to "walk on water," but I am distracted by the wind. "Oh ye of little faith!" I need to talk more time to see God's blessings and show Him gratitude.

Another big moment for me was in Matthew 1. Joseph is about to divorce Mary and in the verse is the word, "thought." Joseph was thinking and pondering his situation when he had his dream about Mary giving birth to a baby and they should call his name Jesus. Joseph was doing what President Hinckley has told us to do--think and ponder. Jade pointed out in chapter 2 all the references to prophecies about Christ and what a responsibility Joseph had to take care of his family. She went on to talk about how Joseph was led by dreams and how the dreams helped fulfill more prophecies (like how Jesus would be a Nazarine). And it hit me again! There is no way Joseph could have all this personal revelation without studying, thinking, and praying. Joseph is a great example to me of how to receive personal revelation.

Our next bible study group will be next Thursday at 3pm. We are going to read Matthew 7-12. I talked to Jade and she said it was fine if I invited, Mary Lynn. She is the wife of another MBA student and Lars's friend, Shawn or Sean. We had them over for dinner on Sunday. My guess is Mary Lynn is non-denominational like Jade. We'll see. Like Jade and I, Mary Lynn is new to Iowa City.

Stopped a bit short because I wanted to save my legs for the hike we were going to do in the afternoon. We hiked to Timp Caves...not a hike I would recommend for people with lots of little kids unless you have help...It was beautiful and humbling..not too intense but considering I was carrying a baby...a little bit more work than by myself. The only problem was the narrowness of the trail and the drop offs....I'm still having a little stress thinking about what if someone had fallen. We didn't though and all made it up and down safely..and it was worth it to see the spectacular beauty of the caves. They were fabulous. And it was worth it to see the pure delight on my little kids faces. Jacob, the baby, was especially worth it. He was very animated clapping and babbling, pointing and cooing...who says they don't understand anything. Joseph had a great time too. With wide eyes he said with confidence, "We're not stuck in the caves, Mommy...." It was great..but I don't think we'll be doing it any time soon. Thanks to Elizabeth and Ted and James for all your help and for your wonderful company.

I love taking him places especially because he gets so excited. Did I tell you about taking him on the bus and how so super excited he was(Jakey baby stayed home)

Another fun thing we've been doing is I have the kids count off to make sure everyone is there. (benjamin says one, Jenny two and so forth). I guess I can crash tomorrow but I hate telling my kids I can't do things because I'm too tired....we'll see how it goes...I'm excited because when I was doing the tempo runs (that were killing me) before I couldn't go that fast. I was lucky to do 8:20 miles. Yay for faster times.  I may need one of those shirts so I can go chick some boys!! Of course Benjamin was quick to point out that he can still run faster than me in case I was getting prideful(which of course I'm not since I know this is a lot of girls training pace but it felt good to know I'm at least improving)

Let's hear it for little things like fancy laundry soap and fast tempo runs! I am so proud of you. I know it took a lot of courage to try a tempo run again. Congratulations! You were super fast! And you can tell Benjamin that I said so. Not a lot of people can break 16 minutes when running two miles.

Good for you! However, Hubby might put a stop to these tempo runs if it makes you buy more expensive things;-)!

Okay...now comes the real triumph for me....I was able to run a tempo run yesterday, take care of my family normally, and even can homemade salsa in the evening(which is a fairly big job)....and run my normal 5 miles at about 11:00 minute mile pace today....WITHOUT CRASHING (this is the key phrase...anyone can do all those things and wear themselves out any day)

I'm so happy to be at this point. I realize for me anyway that each time I have a child I'm sacrificing my fitness a bit because I can't stay in that type of shape during pregnancy and when I have a new baby to take care of. I lose it every time and then it takes me awhile to get it back. The sacrifice is totally worth it for me because I have a testimony of the sacred calling I have as a mother...as many LDS women do and have been taught to do. However...it is a triumphant day for me when I can see that despite my sacrifices and my time away from being fit that I am back to a level that I can feel very happy about.

I am also grateful to Sasha for being dogmatic about not giving up and helping me stay consistent. I would not have been able to do it on my own personally because I am not an athlete and wasn't trained as one as a child. Like Michelle likes to say...some bodies are forced to run...

From Shauna on Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 12:00:26

Silly me! I have never been pregnant, so I don't know what I'm talking about. I did see that you have continued to run during pregnancies, but pregnant with twins would probably be a whole different story! Now, looking back at the comments, it all makes sense.

Anyway, I am so impressed at your energy level! I don't have that much energy, and it's just me and my husband!

After a fairly miserable night I finally went downstairs to sleep at about 4:30 a.m and decided to sleep in and not get up at 5:45. Jakey my baby decided to moan and groan about the stuffed nose he had and keep me awake ALL NIGHT!! I feel okay and did my five. I even took my kids to what we affectionately call" The COOLEST park" We met my sister Becky there and had a perfect warm fall day playing at this really big really cool park. I love taking my kids places.

What a great mom you are- taking your kids to the "coolest" park! Smart too- maybe they wore themselves out while you got to sit a bit? Does Becky have kids? Does she homeschool too?

yay...I got 30 this week. Actually 31 because I ran a mile I didn't blog ...too lazy to get back on last night and put it on. My mom and I went to a play today....amazing how refreshed I came back feeling after being about to sit and breathe for 3 hours. I missed my kids enough to come back after only 3 hours which was also a good feeling. I love my kids.

We must be frozen feet sisters.

Today I was thinking about what good times we had driving to, waiting for, and driving from races this year. Bad luck head bands, Good luck head bands, meeting Jeannie at the restrooms, singing with Joseph in the van, me thinking your van clock was an hour slow, telling you to park five miles away from the starting line, and I hope we have more. Even if it has to be a 10k in heaven! I look forward to participating in races with you. Hope you have a great Sunday. Love, Adrianne

Today felt better than Sat. I was watching the miles and dragging my feet on Sat. Today it just kind of flew by and before I knew it we had run 4.5....nice to only have a 1/2 mile left.  I'm excited for family home evening tonight because we are going to have our first family council. There was a lesson about it in Relief Society last week that impressed me and I want to try to have a positive problem solving session. Sasha recently quoted our friend in our last ward as saying to a group of men working on setting up a stage together, "Guys...don't notice a problem unless you have a solution" I like that and I'm going to take it on  as our family's creed. We want to work together as a family. Noticing a problem without suggesting a solution is simply complaining...not positive and not helpful. Noticing a problem and having a solution is exciting and uplifting....a fun part of family life when you say...hey...let's do this another way and it will work better. Sasha says we already do it naturally but I think the brethren have counciled us to do this.

For anyone needing translation of LDS(Mormon) terms...please feel free to ask.

How did your family council go? Our FHE lesson was about the story of Noah. We acted out six different animals. Will loved it. He thought his dad was chasing him, but Lars was just a wonderful animal impersonator. I especially liked his snake. After Lars and I acted out our six animals, Will "took the floor." He turned in circles, growled, and mooed.

From sarah on Mon, Oct 22, 2007 at 23:11:11

I wish I had been there...that is so adorable!! We didn't have a full blown family council but we introduced the idea and talked about how it should be a positive problem solving session. The kids were so excited. I'm excited because I think that it will help me and all of us stop complaining and start talking to each other in positive ways...yay for the gospel and inspired brethren. I'm so thankful.

Sarah, could not figure out how to enter her goals etc. in helping Sylvie set up her blog. Any ideas? Maybe something wrong at my end. We have two computers, could not enter from either. I expect Sylvie will post after her run tomorrow. I like, if you don't have a solution, not a problem. It is interesting how one run can be a tough foot in the mud run and the next one a breeze. If anyone ever discovers the secret? that would be something.

There have been several days where Amanda and I are talking and don't pay attention to how far we've been going...it's great. Especially since we run around and around the block we lose track of the miles. What a wonderful thing a training partner is.

I think I made her a bit upset today when I pointed out how much sugar is in yogurt and how much I hate that. I just can't help it...it's one of my pet peeves how sugar has to be the second ingredient in a lot of foods. I know, I know...it tastes better that way....and I know yogurt needs it because it would be rather bitter without it but anyway...

My kids and I had a lot of fun yesterday playing like we were going on a trip(much better and easier than a real trip), The best part was that I got to be one of the kids in the back. I picked about 10 fights with Benjamin and asked for four potty stops in about 5 minutes. Jenny, the mom, was so patient...she let me go every time I asked.

Then we got down to business and "traveled to Arizona, New York and outer space" We talked mostly about New York and learned about the state bird and good stuff like that. It was so fun I think we are going to do geography lessons like that every time.

I'm really horrible at following other people's curriculums in my homeschool because I have so much fun making stuff up. Although it has been helpful to have a history book that we can sit down and have a good history lesson with little preparation on my part...and if I'm tired I don't have to be super creative.

Fun!

About getting so lost in your run (with your partner) you forget where you are and how far you have gone: That happened to me last night and today. I forgot to blog it, because I really didn't know exactly where I was in my run last night (dark and stormy) and loved it. This morning, I was just ssssooo in the zone. I think that is one of the things that makes running fun! I got knocked out of my zone by a big gust of wind.

From Michael on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 16:37:21

So I assume you ran the 5 miles in 26:40 (so you could meet Sasha's 5:20 dream)

From sarah on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 17:09:49

Wait a minute...I thought Sasha's dream was 5:50 pace...not 5:20...HELP!!! 5:50 was fast enough. If he's lucky maybe someday I'll consent to trying to run at 6:50 pace. I did run a 6:52 mile. once but that's it. ...once

From Kim on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 17:13:14

I just think it's cute that that is what he dreams about! I haven't quite had a running dream yet, unless you count the ones where you can't run away from the bad guy or you just run in slow motion.

From Craig on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 18:29:39

A little off the subject, but I couldn't help noticing that you homeschool your kids. Good for you. We did that with our daughter for 1st and 2nd grade, as she was bored at public school for the first couple months of 1st grade. It worked out great, both for her and our pre-school aged son. We have her back in public school now for 3rd grade (her choice), but we are still supportive of home schooling.

BTW- Geography was (and still is) her favorite subject. It's crazy how many kids in high school don't know their geography basics. It sounds like your kids are getting a great (and fun) education.

From sarah on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 19:09:09

Thanks craig...I appreciate the support. Sasha is the homeschooling fanatic and I'm trying it on for size...for a long time looks like...the kids won't let me put them in public school now and it's working out well for our family.

From laura on Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 21:39:17

For a good reason, too, Sarah! Who'd want to go back to public school with fun lessons like that!!! I love hearing about great home schooling moments. I hope to be able to homeschool our children too (except for my oldest who has special needs - she does well with the structure of public school. Home school is happily less structured - timewise.)

I have trouble feeling super tired when the cold winter hits. I'm going to try making sure to take vitamins early this year...that seemed to help me last year. I think my body gets used to all the fresh fruit and all of a sudden it's gone. Any ideas?

From Christi on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 12:29:40

Well- you know I'm only doing 6 'cause your hubby told me to! Ha! Really, I'm glad he did. I'm just trying to run an hour a day (which usually turns out to be about 6) then I don't get too overwhelmed thinking of all the miles I have to get in. I hear you about being tired. I think the best remedy is SLEEP! Catch a nap or get in bed earlier if you can. Oranges are good right now as far as fruit goes. Have a great day!

From Lulu on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 13:32:59

I agree with you about the fruit. Citrus is picked in North America in the winter, so it is the best for winter consumption. Fall is also a great time for apples. Late season tomatoes (yes, they are a fruit) are still available as most growers plant a second crop after the heat of the summer. Although not a fruit, sweet potatoes are packed with nutrients and are being harvested as I write this. Of course, you can get grapes, bananas and mangos other fruits right now because they come from South America. However, the pesticides they use are a big issue for me.

From Lulu on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 13:35:15

BTW, Sarah, do you make your own baby food? I make about 75% of what Bubbles eats. I thought if you do, we could exchange some ideas.

49:47 I'm going to try and write my times in here now. I felt like today was a good run. We were going faster than 10minute miles and chatting the miles away again. It is especially easy to get lost on how far we've gone because we are running around my block again and again and in the dark too. It's kind of like a dream.

Feeling better..I think if I drink enough water I don't miss the fresh fruits as much. We eat a lot of apples from fruit stands in the winter. We have a great one nearby that sells a whole box of slightly marred apples (most totatlly fine by my standard but not picture perfect) for $5....it's called Allred's on University Ave in Provo for locals that may not have heard of it..best deal on fruit anywhere!!

Did another tempo run today. When we left the house the entire family was on the move together. Benjamin was on a bike...the babies were in the stroller, Jenny and Julia were running along side Mommy and Daddy. It always feels cool when we can do that.

I don't know what my overall time was for the run but my tempo was 15:47. A tiny bit faster than last week's but it felt much harder. Maybe it was because it was at the end of the day. Maybe it was mental because Benjamin and Sasha were there and I couldn't think I was doing my own thing...don't know. Feel happy about it and don't feel too tired so I think I'll be okay tomorrow. For me this is the most important. I have a hard time finding time to recover.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

52:49...got up at 5:55...slept through Sasha's alarm...I have so trained my mind to not wake up to the sound of his alarm..I'll have to remember and bring my phone into our room at night so I can wake up to my alarm. I felt a little sleepy but  not too bad (definitely felt worse in my life admidst all the babies I've been through) I did the five miles at a fairly decent pace for a recovery run. I hope to get faster in the future on tempo and recovery but feel okay. Now all I have to do is get my kids to memorize their parts really fast this morning before the primary program practice. Which as ward organist I have sooo enjoyed the month of October with General Conference and the primary program making me nice and lazy in my practicing. Actually I've wanted to go and practice but I can't get in there to do it because a lady in my ward has students there constantly during October for a recital they are having in a week so they can practice on the organ the recital will be at....it's been tricky but luckily I haven't had to play much this month.

51:40....not super fast today but hey..it's Monday. Although actually Mondays are usually my supercharged days because I'm actually well rested from our slow Sundays.

I tried a new thing with my kids yesterday that was fun. We made a bunch of cards up and put them in a big envelope. The rule of the game was to do whatever you draw. They got to ask Sasha and I to tell them family stories, make cookies for the Primary teachers, memorize scriptures for treats and play some new games. I thought the day went better than normal but they said they were still a little bit bored. I think part of our problem is we are around eachother all week anyway and so we are ready to see different people but not always organized enough to make it happen.

The story I told Jenny was how I met her Daddy. I ended it by telling her how lucky she was to have him for a Daddy...she said, "I know..he is one of my best friends"  Then she also usually comments that it's great that I married him because how else would she have gotten her gorgeous red hair.  She is so innocently vain..it's adorable. She is a very sweet and obedient girl so I don't worry about her really being vain or superficial when she's older. Hopefully I can teach her to shine with an beauty from within that will mean more to her than gorgeous red hair anyway...

I loved Halloween as a child and have a lot of fun with it as an adult (although it's not quite as fun when you are in charge..but I love watching the joy on my kids faces so it's worth it)

Amanda and I got to run on the trail today. Funny...but in the dark it doesn't really make a difference to me where I run. And especially with someone to talk to.

I feel like we keep going pretty slow..maybe it's the dark or maybe we are just tired Moms...I wish we could get a little more pep in our step and do sub 10  miles again.

Tempo run 15:56....had an issue with the leaves on the ground making my eyes go crazy so I slowed down a little bit at the end.

I am excited about this run though because I ran smarter today. I relaxed the first half mile and then starting working a bit more gradually, gradually until pushing it hard the last half mile(except when I lost concentration because my eyes with going nutso looking at all the leaves on the ground) I'll blame the leave thing on the fact that I have one nearsighted and one farsighted eye and they are a little imbalanced . Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween. Our party went perfectly . I had a fun spread of food. Next year I may ask people to bring something to make it more fun for them to share one of their families treats....I made this incredible apple cider in my crockpot with whole allspice, cloves, cinnamon sticks and orange slices floating in it. It was a classic beauty and actually the hit of the party. We had fun talking and the kids played and watched a crazy ailen movie that is based on a book series that Benjamin LOVES.

Congratulations on the tempo. Based on my 3 months on this blog, in a while (unless you become, er, with child) you will be writing about flying through a two mile tempo like it is nothing. Then it will go to three...

From Lulu on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 22:48:31

Oh yeah and life has been crazy since we started the homemade baby food discussion. I buy all kinds of veggies and steam them when I make dinner, let them cool and put them in ice cube trays. Then I transfer them to zippered bags.

Of course now that she's older we feed her off our plates. However, I eat a LOT of salad. It is going to be a long time before she eats that! She just now has two teeth coming in.

From sarah on Fri, Nov 02, 2007 at 08:17:20

You sound like a wonderful mom and person. I think I will get use to the tempo runs in a couple of weeks and yes...maybe I will try for three...hadn't thought about it but sounds like a good next step...thanks for the idea.

I love the idea of steaming veggies while you are cooking dinner...maybe I'll try that with the next bambino. I used to make a lot of sweet potatoes that way for my third baby Julia. She wasn't a big food baby..kind of liked nursing until she was one and then finally branched out into a more solid diet. Joseph, my fourth was opposite. He demanded to eat EVERYTHING that we were eating from the time he was five months old and old enough to understand the connections between fork, plate and mouth. He was HILARIOUS. That's when out of desperation I figured out that mashing up the baby friendly meals we were having like lentil soup, chicken and rice...etc worked well for him. My fifth was more normal in that he didn't want real meals until about 9 months and was happy to eat baby food for awhile ....until he tasted mama's cooking.

For the caramel apples I tried crystallized fructose in place of normal sugar in a caramel sauce recipe I found online but I also found a recipe using honey and think that I'll try that one instead next time because the fructose didn't stick to the apples...it was delicious however and my kids loved them.

have a good day.

We went fast today...unfortunately I didn't have the Garmin so we aren't quite sure but we were flying...got a little tired at the end. Sasha will probably write about this too but it's too funny...

Yesterday at FHE Julia taught a lesson about love. She starts out saying," Love is important and people love each other. The most expensive kind of love is....marriage."

Sasha and I were doubled up..how funny..how true...so in honor of this well known fact but not commonly uttered by baby's lips I drew a picture of Sasha and I holding hands. I have a thought bubble coming from my head with images of rings, houses, and other expensive things...Sasha has a frown on his face with dollar signs floating around in his thought bubble...poor guys..they have no idea what they are getting into ...do they?  Sasha and I have had quite a few laughs about it....

Cute story! So true...

I thought about you today, Sarah! I went to our stake humanitarian day and actually (prepare for a shock) sewed something! I did a simple quilt top--but of course I had to choose material that was purple because it STILL had the thread in it that YOU had helped me put in! Remember that purple napkin? Ha ha. One of these days I'm going to have to bite the bullet and learn how to thread that thing. Until then--bring on the purple crafts! I'm a seamstress, kind of...

Good job on your running! Sounds like 5 is getting pretty easy for you if you are starting to "fly". I still mostly am slogging through 5, but hopefully someday soon I'll be able to add some speed.

I'm trying to think of what entertaining things happened today besides my run...um..oh...I think today was my stressed out in public day. I was in a huge hurry to get home and turn off the oven...I know...bad but we were only gone 1/2 hour and I am so spoiled by Sasha always being there I kind of forget when he goes to the temple on Wednesday mornings and isn't there...at the computer like he always is. So anyway, we are at the library and I'm in a mad rush to get home and the security guard stops me because the beeper thing goes off. I have five little kids, high blood pressure over the chicken in the oven and 34 items that I think he's going to have to look at one by one. Luckily it only took at second but I didn't try too hard to show my displeasure...I wasn't rude...just kind of begging him to let me go and hoping the guilt trip worked....felt bad afterwards...should I bake the poor guy cookies?

Then later today I was at Julia's dance recital practice....it lasted two hours so I  took her and a friend for the first hour and another Mom came to take over for the last hour and was going to drive home.

As I was leaving I asked the receptionist of the senior center (that's where the recital will be held) if they could please turn the heat down. She said no. I said could you put a fan in there. (there was a fan sitting behind her and not being used) She got up and left.

A lady comes back and says, "Do you have a problem?" (I will make a note to self to avoid answering this type of question in public in the future...it does not mean that she wanted to help me but was really trying to pick a fight...) I explained the heat problem and asked about a fan...I should have pointed out the one sitting in the office behind us but was too polite.  That's when the trouble started...she wanted to take out her frusturation at all the little kids running in the halls(which of course my kid and friend weren't doing) and I was the target...I got out of there fast after she demanded that I stay there with my daughter and I guess control all the other 60 some odd little ones driving her nuts.  STRESS.......Anyway, I feel better now that I wrote in down and hope that anyone that actually read this far didn't feel stressed out reading it but hopefully just got a good laugh at a weird day.

Was this at the senior center by where I work? I know who to talk to if you want to leave a complaint and I can make sure that it doesn't happen again.

From sarah on Fri, Nov 09, 2007 at 10:57:55

No it was the Orem friendship Center and it is not in my nature to make a formal complaint unless I think it is a problem that would happen again. Anyway I don't blame her for being grouchy with me I just wish I had been above reacting at all and been super kind to her...which I wasn't...

Okay the flying on Monday finally caught up with Amanda and i today..we were both dragging and waiting for the end to come. I usually don't mind adding a little at the end but today I stopped at 5 on the DOT...Sasha was laughing at me for walking the last little bit...oh well. Okay...it's been a rough week. Our stove broke today ... and then I missed Julia's dance recital and she was heartbroken. We went to this two hour rehearsal for it yesterday and I discovered that her class did two dances at the very end. I figured I could show up later and be okay. If we hadn't hit bad rush hour traffic ( which of course I didn't consider because I'm an airheaded housewife who is usually rushing through dinner at that time and not thinking about the rest of the world)..anyway, if we hadn't hit bad traffic we would have made it okay but we just missed it. Very sad. Luckily her friends hung around at the end and the teacher let them get up on stage. What a difference...she went from crying to exuberant in two seconds..she obviously loves to perform....does not get stage fright and is a natural dancer. Her teacher said when she noticed Julia was gone she thought..."Oh no..we need her..everyone watches her to get the moves right." Anyway...sad...guilty mom feelings but nothing traumatic so I'll be content with life...I just like to dramatize things a bit.

Okay...I'm hopeless...I have no idea how far I ran today...running around the block by myself. I lost count and I accidentally forgot to turn the Garmin back on after stopping to take off my coat. I'm calling it a taper before a possible race tomorrow...especially since I woke up late and I had to push the baby in the stroller...However I am feeling back to my normal self and not overly stressed about cranky ladies or security guards.

No hurt feelings here. And really you have to understand my sarcastic sense of humor. I wasn't pleased that people didn't run hard Friday, I was just having fun & playing around. Sasha tells it like he sees it and I can appreciate it- he has lots of good ideas!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 18:21:59

Mik'l - no matter how badly you perform there is always enough people that did worse. Just think about the millions of Americans that chose to stay in bed and/or watch TV that day. But looking at them will not help you do your best.

From Lybi on Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 18:32:52

I'm sure there are some Russians who sit around watching TV all day, too! ;) Actually, it really is unfair to say that Americans watch TV all day...after all, some of the day we play video games, right?

Russian TV is so boring that they drink vodka instead.

Now I know why my pathetic run felt okay yesterday. I have a cold that is zapping my running energy. I think in a non running body I would probably be more sick and feel tired during the day. I feel fine..have energy to cook and clean and do things around the house but once I start running...yuck. I knew I was in trouble before my race today when the warm up felt hard and I wanted my running partner to slow down for me...pathetic.

Amanda was hoping to be able to keep up with me. She took off in the first quarter and I never caught up. I ran the first half in 13:40..felt like I was gonna die..then I finally started feeling alive and ran the second half in 12:29. I was totally bummed to be beat by my partner but totally  happy for her time when she thought she couldn't do it. yay for Amanda.......I'm excited for her and thinking she'll be able to do tempo runs with me now.

We didn't have the Garmin again today so we just timed it. With 6 sets of strides (I decided to take Sasha's advice on this one) and not going that slow in between a time of 55 minutes was mysteriously slow. I figure we added a good half mile or maybe more.

Sasha is going to have a good laugh on me today. I have ALWAYS teased him that he would be the type to go on TV without his hair brushed..

My kids were filmed for a KBYU short little commercial for their Kids Club. I was so busy getting the kids ready I didn't bother to do my hair or make-up...figured they wouldn't be filming me. I did get filmed a little bit but the worst part was that it was one of those close ups where the camera is right in your face and then the camera man said, "Oh...that was good.." You know..woman's pride...gotta look our best....anyway...we had a good day and a super fun time playing at the Tree House Museum in Odgen while a camera man followed us around taping everything we did....What a great way to preserve memories...

You mean reasons, reasons. Sleep makes a HUGE difference in my pace, and especially my mental outlook during the run. Hope you sleep well tonight.

You are making me curious about doing strides. Maybe once I'm a little more used to this new weekly mileage...

I kind of think of you as a virtual training partner and I want to be able to keep up...eventually. :)

From sarah on Thu, Nov 15, 2007 at 08:02:20

You are (i think) more naturally talented as an athlete and will be surprised when you start burning rubber and beating all of these fast running chicks. Actually running with Christine makes you run faster than me alot of days. I am lazy when I run when my partner..that's why I'm doing strides to help the overall pace and get me more use to a faster time...I think they are way fun...even when my partner(who is also more naturally talented than me) leaves me in the dust on every single stride!!

From Lybi on Thu, Nov 15, 2007 at 08:38:21

I beg to differ. Remember (how could you forget) when Sasha took you for your very first run at 8:30 pace or someting like that and you made it 3 miles with no previous training?

From sarah on Thu, Nov 15, 2007 at 09:33:49

How sweet of you to say!!

Well maybe we both have hidden running talent...but I think you should definitely give yourself some credit for the work you did in High School and be grateful for the base and knowledge you gained.

My running partner has this fabulous ability to kick her legs up behind her when she does strides that I'm hoping I can learn how to do....that's all I mean...maybe you learned cool stuff in high school that gives you a bit of an edge you will soon see come out as you train.

I'm tired...but it's a good kind of tired...after working hard and hopefully getting stronger.

I did a mini tempo run today since I'm racing next week I didn't want to do one and I've done a lot of strides this week. I was really excited to try out my new form. I didn't have the Garmin working again so I'm not sure if my times were exact but I think that I can run faster with less effort when I concentrate on kicking my legs back behind me more.

I feel like I'm learning something new about running which is actually very exciting for me after years of in some ways being stuck in a rut that I just didn't have the energy or drive to get out of....

So, I warmed up a mile with Julia in 11:20. Then ran the next mile at about 9:00 mile pace. Picked it up to at 13:12 and finished the two miles in 16:55. We think I did the last 1/2 mile in 7:35 pace give or take a little since I didn't hit the marks quite on. I think the new form is helping. It isn't hard to maintain at a fast pace but when I'm going slow I really just feel like shuffling.

I'll make all of you girls jealous today...I got to run with Mik'L this morning. She got up and ran around my block with me at 5 a.m.!!!  She told me this awesome story about how James said to Lybi the day before we came to stay with them back in the wee days of the blog. "Uh, honey, I met this guy on the internet (??) and his entire family is coming to stay with us tomorrow. " Lybi may tell you crazy stories about me slaving away for their family while she lounged around in bed (super sick and I wished I could have nursed her more than I was able to) but that lady treated us like royalty and I am ever grateful to her for one of the most pleasant visits I've ever had. And for all of you that know Lybi you know that she is ...well...what can I say...she's just a special lady and we all love her. :) Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope you are all truly grateful for the challenges you have and for the blessings you receive from facing those challenges with courage and faith. I know I am and I'm thankful for the insight I had to marry Sasha...I almost let him slip away.

Sarah, I am impressed with you getting out on such a cold morning. Hey, Sylvia does not like me coaching her at all. I do yell at her to pick it up at the end of a race if there appears to be someone that might be in her division. She does not get upset with that because she did pick it up, based on my yelling, at a July 4th race, and won a 1st place trophy by 2 seconds. We all mean good as spouses. Sylvia has much more natural talent than me, her choice. Keep it fun, that is the important part, all in fun.

Sarah, don't know if you already read this info off my blog...just disregard if you have.

Here are some websights for info on horseback riding lessons.

utahhorsedirectory.com (stable locations in Utah County)

welcome.net.au/lessons.htm (general info on lessons and pricing...not certain how this will compare to pricing in our county)

Melville Arabians is the closest stable to you, I think. They don't have a web address. An English (style of riding) trainer by the name of Susan (at 367-9492) can answer any of your questions.

My father, Ike Fitzgarrald, works out of Coyote Creek Equestrian Center in Lehi and instructs in English riding. He doesn't often school young riders, but you may call him with questions if you wish.

You can expect to pay probably anywhere from $25-$75 for a lesson. It will vary a good bit from one instructor to another. Lessons are typically given in half-hour to hour sessions. You may want to consider Western riding for a young rider in part because of the deep saddle and because it is a more casual style of riding.

Also, students may choose to take part in group lessons, where a handful of riders take a lesson together. Anyhow, hope this helps.

Let me know if you need more info.

Happy Anniversary to me and Sasha!! 11 years, 5 kids and one really really cool fast running blog. Things are going great.

5.12 in 50:01. Amanda and I have decided that most days we need to be going sub 10 because it just feels better.

Tribute to my husband in honor of our anniversary.

Sasha and I met 15 years ago in Moscow, Russia. When I first met him I was utterly convinced that he was an American and simply would not believe him when he told me in perfect English that he was indeed Russian through and through. Our friendship progressed as I lived there with my family for two more years. I was very impressed with him after getting to know him while he tutored me in math for a few months. He came almost every day and saved me from failing Trigonometry. I remember thinking one day....and the thought came as a sudden bubble in my mind...almost involuntary. "I could marry this guy someday" He left for BYU and I stayed in Russia, we wrote letters and that is when the relationship blossomed. I actually had sworn to myself to never marry a Russian and many of our ex-pat friends frowned on our friendship.

He left for his mission and I came to BYU. We wrote again but this time I wasn't interested. I was in a flirters heaven and I think I dated more than any other girl(except one) that I knew. The other girl went on Monday dates which I abstained from since I was in charge of my family home evening group in my ward and had to obviously be at the meetings.

I nearly missed my chance to marry Sasha...I fell in love with someone else and almost marrried him. After breaking that off I started thinking about what I was going to do with my life and Sasha came back into my mind. He was on a mission in Salt Lake and I had moved to Salt Lake so we weren't allowed to write eachother. I couldn't talk to him so I continued to be distracted by other boys.

When Sasha came back from his mission, distracted as I was, I somehow knew deep down that he was the one for me. When had never even held hands before so I actually just wanted to know if I was...well attracted. As soon as I saw him I knew and he proposed to me after being together an hour....I didn't say yes right away..it's not that fairy tale of a story.

I guess the tribute part comes in that he is the most honest, hardworking, wonderful man..yes of course we've been at eachother's throats sometimes but really as we mature and try to just be unselfish and more Christlike we have a great marriage and I am really thankful for him.   Love ya honey.

Good for you...11 years and more in love than ever (so it sounds). Enjoyed reading a bit about how the two of you met; fun story.

By the way, no worries about the horse info...just wanted to make sure you got it.

I'm in Salt Lake at my sister's house. I had about 5 million things to pack and brought everyone's toothbrushes and everything else but my running shoes. I wasn't sure that I'd be here the whole day but plans changed and I'm staying over night. I think my body will enjoy the rest but it feels weird after running so consistently. Sasha and I had a wonderful day on our anniversary. We had some adventures...meeting famous people, seeing people pass out and having someone mistake me for someone else...again. It's happened my whole life but it has happened the last three times we've gone out together without the kids in a row. People don't seem to say anything to me when I have the kids because they are usually looking at the kids I guess.

The first time it happened in this sucession of three I came up with a fabulous comeback. The guy says, "Is your name Sally?" I said, "No, but I'm sure she is beautiful..." Sasha was so surprised that I had the daring to say this to a stranger...maybe because I caught the guy off guard with my sharp wit. I don't know. Anyway...it was fun and I'm sure I have many chances to use that line again and again because...I have one of those faces. :)

From Cam on Sat, Dec 01, 2007 at 18:47:05

Sarah...I am having trouble posting on the discussion forum and didn't want to crash the party on Sasha's blog right now. It seemed rude right after a marathon. Could you post this somewhere where Sasha and others can see it and respond?

I need some help with some running parameters....

Blood PH (used to measure lactic acid?): resting typical values are about 7.35 to 7.44, varying by individual. How much would/could the blood PH change at the end of a marathon? At what PH would a typical runner be disabled? Does any one have any idea about how to translate blood PH into Lactic Acid concentration? Any ideas about how food/drink during or before racing changes blood PH?

Blood Oxygen Levels: I am guessing that blood oxygen levels as a percent of total saturation are going to stay above 90% throughout a whole marathon...is that right?

Glycogen: What units are used to measure glucose in the blood? What is a typical resting value and a typical level that would force a runner to stop racing? I guess I need upper and lower bounds for glucose or glycogen...

I'm not sure on this as I was running in about 6 inches of snow up at my sister's house and had no watch with me...just ran until it felt like I'd been gone about 20 minutes and then ran another 10  with the kids (we timed that one). I think I should get at least 50 commando points for running in the snow with my three little kids all by myself. Sasha  was in Tennessee.

We miscalculated a bit and added some more. I made my partner slow down a bit...This is not an announcement by far but I'm feeling tired and wondering what could be the cause.........

Everyone turn on KBYU TV sometime this month and you may see me and my kids on the commercial they made of us. I am on for half a second reading a story to Joseph..not that I care but yes....I did not brush my own hair that day....just pulled it back in a pony tail. My neighbor says we looked great....I haven't seen it yet.

Jenny also made a commercial for BYU that should be airing for several years...so don't be surprised if you see it....

I just have to brag. Yesterday I made two Nephite costumes, a stocking for Joseph(easy easy pattern) and a simple but lovely Christmas apron for myself.

Today we are making Nativity sets out of clay that will air dry and we can paint later in the week.

I love Christmas time. Everything about it..even the commericalism...to me it just testifys of man's desire for something better...for things to be more focused on Christ. Yes, yes, I  know some people really only care about themselves and money and la di da but I believe in the Divine Nature of man and that deep down almost everyone seeks for something better, something kinder....that's what I love about Christmas.

Okay so now I'll admit it. I thought I might be pregnant. I don't mind disclosing my medical history here since I think we are all friends and since I'm blogging my runs I feel like I need to tell what's happening in my body.

My friend Fred as I fondly call him has not come to visit yet but the pregnancy tests have all been negative. Might get some blood work done next week to verify...we'll see. I'm going in to see the endocrinologist for my thryoid and may ask they verify my pregnant or non pregnant status. Being pregnant is exhausting but waiting for it can be a lot of work too...Phew. Emotionally I'm getting worn out but trying to just enjoy life and of course love the little ones I have now. I felt so slow and tired and the begninning. I didn't want to finish. Then I got started talking about my glory days in dating when I was a Freshman at BYU. I had some hilarious stories like the time two boys asked me to Homecoming and then one sent flowers and I didn't know who sent them because the card fell off. Or the time two boys pulled out the same talk by Spencer W. Kimball on me about going on their missions and how they wanted me to hold the key to their heart (one was Sasha BTW) and then two guys named Sasha (one again..I did marry) told me they loved me on the same day. (Sasha was on his mission and wrote me a letter.

I was very friendly and cute little thing but not a player at all. I did not try and make these guys fall for me...I was dating a million guys and just having fun and studying hard...I made the Dean's List that semester also..

Anyway, I got lost in thought and we ended up running way extra. Sweet Amanda.

Sarah, you sure seem to have a rich dating history! And your story of meeting and marrying Sasha is a very unusual one. I always wondered if you were from Russia too, and if you speak Russian. Now I got my answer (well, last week, actually). Do you (or Sasha) teach your kids kids Russian? It would be great if they could speak to their grandparents, if nothing else. My daughter, finally, almost at 15, started to realize that maybe it's not such a bad thing after all, and requested a Russian teacher (after years and years of fierce resisting). Now she is even thinking of taking it as a second language in IB. But in my experience, it's tough with kids - Russian is a very hard language to learn and they don't see a point in it. So I'm wondering how you are dealing with it?

Oh, and great job on the run! Whatever helps you get through it - even if it is memories of dating glory :).

From sarah on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 21:01:11

If you guys liked those stories I have many more....like the 6 dates in one weekend...the time a guy called me during a layover, he calculated the exact time I would be there. But I have to clear my name. I was NOT a player...I was just so friendly boys were drawn to my open personality...I didn't kiss anyone at college until I was engaged. Glad you got a kick out of it Mik'L

Maria...you just found out I wasn't Russian..wow. I was born in Utah and raised in Texas. I love Russia and lived there as a teenager. I think I love it more than Sasha...Our kids know a little Russian. They can read it but we are still working on fluency.

We've been having Russian Day with this awesome family we met that homeschools and the mom is native Russian. We are taking the month of December off so I think I'm going to take my kids to the art Museum today and show them the fabulous work of a Mormon artist on display at the BYU Museum. She was a mother of eight and a rancher and still found time to dedicate herself to painting the story of our religion in giant panoramas.

Any mother can appreciate how difficult it is to find time to dedicate to talents, she was an amazing woman and I want to share her beautiful talent with my kiddos today.

Yuck and double yuck...ooey gooey snow today. Made running my normal pace harder of course as we all know.

I never did take my kids to the art museum yesterday. For some odd reason I was so wiped out after my run I had to take a nap and couldn't get going...sad...we'll have to go there another time. Got the rest of my Christmas shopping done.

I nearly killed myself coming home from Ted and Elizabeth's house later today. This very rude driver in a fancy sleek black Lexus pulled out in front on me on slick mushy hilly snow covered roads....you know the type that are death driving on. Well then...he stopped half way up the hill and almost rolled back on me and made me almost not get up the hill. I'm sure he's going to some "I can't drive politely in snow" purgatory when he dies..ooo...

From Benn on Sat, Dec 08, 2007 at 22:05:24

You weren't running with a baby stroller too were you!? Oii I know how the dangerous driving goes. When I lived down in Albany in the city each long run was not so much to achieve any tangible goal other than not getting swiped as those "Oh so not very polite or competent drivers" did rolling stops and/or hung a right on a red light without looking and nearly cut me off at the kneecaps! Glad you're okay though!

From sarah on Sat, Dec 08, 2007 at 22:44:01

No..I'm not crazy like some of the ladies on this blog. I make Sasha push the stroller. I was actually driving behind the Lexus at the time of his impolite maneuvers. I'm sure running on snowy roads in New York can be frightening.

From Lybi on Sat, Dec 08, 2007 at 23:04:01

Good job, Sarah! Hmmm. Feeling really tired, eh? You are going to keep me informed about your situation, aren't you?

Scary about the car. I don't see why he couldn't have just drifted slowly into the gutter and got stuck in a snowbank. That's what I always did when I drove in thst "winter wonderland" known as Provo in December. You meet a lot of nice people that way. (Surprising how many drivers have some kind of shovel in their vehicle.) It is lucky for everyone I ended up in a city with no snow!

From Brent on Sat, Dec 08, 2007 at 23:12:29

Sarah, you and Sasha are such good role models for your children. The running, family life, will really make a difference in their life. Parents really are role models. Winter time running is really the test of dedication. When others look out the window and say no way today, we are on our way.

10 commando points for you and your children.

I'm too lazy to go upstairs and get the Garmin but our time was about 50:42. .

I went to the Doctor. I was hoping that Iwas pregnant and that my hypothyroidism had magically disappeared. Negative on both counts. Thryoid problems are very easy to treat but I told my running partner today that if I was going to write a book on the subject I would call it, "Hypothryoidism" and then smaller "The disease that doesn't kill you but makes you wish you were dead" You feel very very  tired when it is low....which is probably what has been happening to me(but only when Fred visits) since my medicine ran out and I decided to wait until I got pregnant to make another appointment(because we have to pay for our visits out of pocket..we have a huge deductible...I didn't want to go in one month and pay 100  bucks and then have to get retested 1 month later because I was pregnant and that changes things and thus changes my dosage)

Anyway, I am terribly sad but also very happy that at least I have a disease that is very easy to treat and fairly common and well researched.

The only explanation I can fathom for me being so baby hungry  is that my children are so completely adorable that I just don' t ever want to stop having such cute kids...or maybe it's because I'm going to have twins next time and this is God's way of preparing me to really really want the extra work that comes with that...I don't know.....don't mind my rambling...have a good day everyone.

Wow, hypothyroidism is definitely one of those bugger "conditions." One you just have to grin and bear it. Its not too severe is it? That is great that is doesnt effect your pregnancies too terribly bad.

You make me laugh. I agree, adorable kids make it really hard to stop having more. Maybe you can babysit someone's teenager for a while or something...

From sarah on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 14:26:25

52 something..dont' remember now.

I am very sad. A older man in our ward died yesterday. He had heart problems and was old but I am still heart broken. You see Julia loves Grandpas and he had adopted her and Jenny and brought us presents all the time and gave them hugs on Sundays. He was working on a doll house for them for Christmas and I just don't think I've ever been so sad about a man I really didn't know that well passing on. I was so excited to go and help him and for at least a couple more years of friendship with this adopted grandpa. I am not sure of course because he died in his sleep but I wouldn't be surprised if he had been working on one of the dollhouses he was making as Santa Claus for neighborhood little girls. What a dear man. We know exactly where he is now.

I think I might have been complaining about kids in my home the other day that scream for attention from their moms and the moms would say back to them, "Yes sweetie." Nice run too!

From sarah on Thu, Dec 13, 2007 at 13:51:31

Well it takes time to learn the tricks and a lot of time it's out of desperation. I think 5 in 7 years made me fairly desperate for law and order. I just also want to try and teach my kids to respect me, I think they do but I am definitely still working on a lot of the finer parenting techniques. Most of which I think are found in the scriptures....like a soft answer turneth away wrath. I need to work on that one while still teaching them to be patient.

I do fine some days but today I almost stopped at 2 and called it good for the day. I'm so glad I didn't. I think it would have been one of those days where I felt a lack of motivation all day if I didn't get my full run in. It was a busy day, hard in some aspects and nice in others. We went to the funeral of our dear friend and adopted grandpa Bob Johnson. He was such a darling man. I am truly sorry to see him gone and think I will grieve his loss for many years to come. He had such a loving way with my children. They all loved him. I think he truly emanated the scripture where the Savior tells the little children to come unto him and doesn't turn them away.

My two oldest children cried the entire hour and a half at the funeral....Suprisingly my youngest Julia didn't shed a tear.

Absolutely no going over my 5 miles when Amanda is gone...I time it perfectly so I stop right on the dot...I'm super lazy that way I guess....I would like to try running  more but I think I wait until Amanda gets back and we'll do it together...and maybe when it's a bit warmer...like Feb.

Had a great run. Felt strong and ran under 50 minutes!!

Felt good again today..ran in 48..something...forgot to stop watch as I went up driveway and I'm not counting that towards my time.

 Merry Christmas FRB!!!

Happiest and saddest Christmas of my life. Lots of presents and fun this morning...but the dollhouse was there from the man in my ward who started working on it for my girls and died before he finished. Bittersweet.

Up at 5 with the baby...decided to at least get 2 in before the kids came charging out to look at their presents from Santa..Sasha of course wanted me to do all five but I think a break would be okay today anyway. My hamstring has been sore for about a month now and I think it could use a break.

Happy Holidays, Sarah. And what a heartfelt story of the true meaning of Christmas. Best of luck with the Christmas fun!! Kudos for getting in a run today!

You're hamstring has been all sore? I didn't know that....Hope it gets better soon. 2 miles on Christmas is like 15 on a normal day. Great job!

From sarah on Wed, Dec 26, 2007 at 09:49:06

Merry Christmas to you to Benn.

I'm not sure what's up with my hamstring. Sasha says it's just trying to catch up to my other muscles and will be strong enough soon. Did you have a nice holiday?

I woke up as wonder woman today. I ran 5 miles almost effortlessly in less than 45 minutes....want to know my secret? Well..it has to do with a present Sasha got for Chistmas. Something he's been wanting for a long time. We'll try to get a picture of it posted this week. Once we find an unsuspecting neighbor to take a picture of us.

I also want to apologize to the sensitive members of this blog...such as myself...for that incredibly annoying ad that keeps popping up about the new sitcom with a name that makes my blood curl. As a mom that's trying to teach my children the importance of modesty and not making jokes about our body I'm really unhappy about it.  And for those of you who think it's funny...shame on you..I'm sure your mother taught you better.

Sarah, it sounds like you may have used some commando points today. It is always great to have one of those days. Less than 45 minutes for 5 miles is a great run in this cold weather.

no time for today. My legs are sore from yesterday's wonder woman thing...By the way...for those of you who didn't read Sasha's blog, I had a lot of help yesterday. Sasha hooked me up to the power harness and he dragged me out for a run. We had fun playing horse and buggy...I was the buggy. :)

This harness situation sounds quite interesting! You're getting in some great miles, esp. for Christmas week. Great pace yesterday too!

From rachelle on Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 16:25:43

your brave I am not sure I would want to be a buggy ha ha

From sarah on Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 17:14:47

It was kind of fun but I am soooo sore...just like a ran a race. I would love to do it again...just fewer miles. We get great looks from the neighbors. Maybe if we are running at the right time and place will get our picture in the paper..it's quite a sight.

Legs still sore..thanks a lot honey...(from the harness run..see Wednesday) but I had some friction on the trail and got in about 10 min mile pace..which is a good normal run for me. :)

I may do another mile with Julia this afternoon...or talk Sasha into letting me try cross country skiing. My legs are still sore but my hamstring was so bad I could hardly move. I am resting it.

Oh my! I've been out of town and haven't seen your blog in a while. So your hamstring has been complaining about being dragged 5 miles by your super-speedy hubby. Your hamstring probably has a point! I hope you feel better soon. I think I'd be willing to try a harness run with James, but 5 miles is a lot! Bravery is one of your strong points, Sarah.

From sarah on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 12:28:42

Thanks Lybi...I feel brave when you say that. I thought it was kind of fun to do the harness but will definitely do less next time....

Hello wonderful Sarah!! I saw you called two or three nights ago. I went to call you right now, but I can't find my phone. I thought I put it on the dresser. But, I couldn't find it. I didn't want to turn on the light and search more because Will was asleep. I'll try again tomorrow or Monday.

We are still in Ohio and loving time with family. My sister, Margaret, and her family arrived today. It's so fun to see her boy, Josh, and Will run around.

I am glad you had a good Christmas. I'm sure life is just different without Brother Johnson.

I hope you are able to recover from the harness run. My right hamstring/hip/nerve has been bothering me yesterday and today. It seems to come and go. I miss you. Happy Sunday!

Happy New Year.

My sore hamstring was so bad on Saturday when I tried to run another mile I decided to rest it completely today. Funny how your body works. Now my back is hurting because I haven't run as much.....guess I sat too much yesterday. It makes me grateful that usually I can run and anxious to get back to it tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about the hammy, I would guess it was from being towed behind Sasha. Take it easy and put some ice on the hamstring then follow it up with some heat.

From sarah on Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:59:39

It's feeling a lot better today..I think I'll be pretty much back to better tomorrow. I'll try the heat and ice though...thanks.

From josse on Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 10:05:02

Make sure you ice and then heat about 5-7 mins on both.

From Brent on Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 14:51:27

Sarah, have a great 2008 running year. Be careful with those hamstrings, they can be tough to get back right.

Uh oh, another day off? I am hoping your hamstring is feeling great and you just haven't blogged yet.

Good luck Sarah, and thanks for being a major inspiration to me this past year. Happy New Year!
